REFLECTION

Being a student who is really interested in the field of business, this semester in this
subject is very interesting and informative on my part. I gained knowledge on certain business
concepts and theories which will help me become a more successful business person in the
future, whether as an entrepreneur or a professional employed in the corporate world. To
mention some of the significant concepts I learned in this subject, the following are those I
consider most substantial:

1. Workforce Planning. I am so interested in this particular topic because it gave me the

idea at the earliest time of what we should expect when we, the students, will graduate
from college, and look for work in the future. I expected that looking for a job is as easy
as filing a resume, but the discussion on this topic proved my expectation to be wrong.
An applicant, before being hired, must undergo a very complex process of human
resource recruitment and selection which may take longer time.

2. Environmental Scanning. I also learned about the effects which may be brought about
by events which are beyond the control of business organizations, whether positive or
negative. In particular, I became more proficient in using tools such as STEEPLE, PEST,
and Ansoff Matrix in scanning for opportunities which may potentially bring profit to
certain businesses like apple, KFC, and SAMSUNG, the businesses which became the
subjects of my analyses in the works I accomplished in this subject. At first, I thought
doing business is just simply producing goods and services and selling them to the
intended consumers, but it’s more than that. It further requires activities such as
environmental scanning to integrate external information in the business decisions. For
example, my business may have the necessary financial capital to afford expansion in a
particular country, but due to political restrictions expansion may not be possible.

3. UN global goals. While this topic is just an incident to the UN week, it still played an
important role in my growth in the field of business. Analysing business concepts such
as economies of scale and diseconomies of scale in relation to the recognized UN global
goals opened a new perspective that doing business is not only for the business owner’s
personal gain but ultimately for the gain of every member of the society. Doing business
extends to the concept of employment and preservation of natural resources which are
essential for the survival of the human race. Thus, only decisions which are logical and
ethical must be had so that doing business is aligned with the goals of every nation in
promoting the general welfare.

4. Business Growth. While people seek for their personal growth, businesses also do the
same. Doing business is a lifelong commitment not only for the business owner’s sake,
but also for every single stakeholder. While doing my research on the strategies on how
to carry out internal growth, I came to realize as well that the growth of the business is
equivalent to the growth of every single individual in that business. Employees may have
better chances of earning higher levels of salaries.; a large part of the community would
be provided better employment opportunities; and a country becomes more productive,
thus becomes more economically stable.

All these concepts will play an important role in my future endeavours in this subject for
the second semester, especially when I start doing my Internal Assessment. While I still expect
that more business concepts and ideas will be taught to us for the coming semester, I am at
ease that when I do my IA, I already have ideas which would help me accomplish it. Also,
having those above-mentioned concepts would help me reinforce my understanding in the new
concepts that I will learn in this subject. As a promise to myself, I will become more proactive in
studying this subject, especially that my interest lies in business.
