Industrial Management

Industrial management is that branch of engineering that deals with the creation

and management of systems that integrate people and materials and energy in

productive ways

Concept of industrial management. ... Industrial management is the

organizational process that includes strategic planning, setting; objectives,

managing resources, deploying the human and financial assets needed to

achieve objectives, and measuring results.

Industrial management is an academic field that brings together the knowledge

of the interactions between business/management and

technology/engineering. ... The point of departure is mostly the operations

of industrial firms and the value-creating processes for these operations.

Industrial management term applied to highly organize modern methods of

carrying on industrial, especially manufacturing and operations. Industrial

management is a process of planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and

managing the activities of any industry. It combines and transforms various

resources used in the system and subsystem of the organization into value added

product in a controlled manner. Industrial management includes following for

the effective management. Industrial Engineering and Management aims to

uncover and solve organizational issues by attempting to establish a desirable

allocation of management resources through the use of technologies.

In an area where reactions to continuous changes are needed, the field of

Industrial Engineering and Management utilizes “technology on technology”

including a variety of management technologies and history and philosophy of

science and technology.

The industrial engineering and management view, approach, domain and

methodology. It involves the environment which includes man, materials,

money, and information. The environment with physical and mathematical

sciences, humanities and engineering creates an approach for the industrial

management and engineering. Broadly the industrial management concept

includes the planning, controlling and organizing the system.

Planning is the activity that establishes a course of action and guide future

decision-making. In this the person defines the objectives for the operations

subsystem of the organization and the policies and procedures for achieving the

desired objectives. This stage includes clarifying the role and focus of

operations in the organization’s overall strategy. It also involves product

planning, facility designing and using the conversion process.

Organizing are the activities that establishes a structure of tasks and authority.

The managers establish a structure of roles and the flow of information within

the operations subsystem. They determine the activities required to achieve the

goals and assign authority and responsibility for carrying them out.

What is Industrial Management?

Industrial management is an academic field that brings together the knowledge

of the interactions between business/management and technology/engineering.

The word management refers to handling organizations, while industrial refers

to the developments of the industrial revolution in the 19th century and the, still

current, mass production system.  When we speak about “industrialized”

companies, they usually are somewhat large-scale, systematically managed, i.e.

there’s a high degree of specialization and standardization. One good example is

H&M. H&M sells lots of clothes (high volume) to a low price. That’s only

possible because they are producing in masses.

These two terms are closely related since industrial management gives

engineers the skills to understand the technical implications of management

decisions, as well as the business implications of technical decisions. In order to

be successful it is important that they understand both fields, and how they

relate to each other. The point of departure is mostly the operations of industrial

firms and the value-creating processes for these operations. From there, the

development, improvement and control of the value-creating processes are the

key issues of the field.

How do we understand that?

First of all, it’s important to create value for a customer. But that isn’t always so

easy. You can’t get any value, without investing something first. So it’s

important to check what resources you have used up in order to gain value, and

how they relate to each other.

Importance of Industrial Management

It helps in Achieving Group Goals - It arranges the factors of production,

assembles and organizes the resources, integrates the resources in effective

manner to achieve goals. It directs group efforts towards achievement of pre-

determined goals. By defining objective of organization clearly there would be

no wastage of time, money and effort. Management converts disorganized

resources of men, machines, money etc. into useful enterprise. These resources

are coordinated, directed and controlled in such a manner that enterprise work

towards attainment of goals.

Optimum Utilization of Resources - Management utilizes all the physical &

human resources productively. This leads to efficacy in management.

Management provides maximum utilization of scarce resources by selecting its

best possible alternate use in industry from out of various uses. It makes use of

experts, professional and these services leads to use of their skills, knowledge,

and proper utilization and avoids wastage. If employees and machines are

producing its maximum there is no under employment of any resources.

Reduces Costs - It gets maximum results through minimum input by proper

planning and by using minimum input & getting maximum output. Management

uses physical, human and financial resources in such a manner which results in

best combination. This helps in cost reduction.

Establishes Sound Organization - No overlapping of efforts (smooth and

coordinated functions). To establish sound organizational structure is one of the

objective of management which is in tune with objective of organization and for

fulfillment of this, it establishes effective authority & responsibility relationship

i.e. who is accountable to whom, who can give instructions to whom, who are

superiors & who are subordinates. Management fills up various positions with

right persons, having right skills, training and qualification. All jobs should be

cleared to everyone.

Establishes Equilibrium - It enables the organization to survive in changing

environment. It keeps in touch with the changing environment. With the change

is external environment, the initial co-ordination of organization must be

changed. So it adapts organization to changing demand of market / changing

needs of societies. It is responsible for growth and survival of organization.

Essentials for Prosperity of Society - Efficient management leads to better

economical production which helps in turn to increase the welfare of people.

Good management makes a difficult task easier by avoiding wastage of scarce

resource. It improves standard of living. It increases the profit which is

beneficial to business and society will get maximum output at minimum cost by

creating employment opportunities which generate income in hands.

Organization comes with new products and researches beneficial for society.

Industrial Management is the branch of management that is concerned with the

creation and management of systems that incorporate people, materials and

energy in productive ways. This area of study lays emphasis on

technicalmanagement, problem-solving and enhancement of productivity.

Application of Industrial Management

IT IS:- 1. Goal oriented. 2. Effective utilization of human and other Resources.

3. Integral part of any group activity. Industrial management is the structured

approach to manage operational activities of an organization. 1. Industrial

management

 APPLICATION

Initially the scope & application of industrial management was restricted to

manufacturing industry. Later on it spread to non- manufacturing activities such

as construction & transportation, farm and air- line operations and maintenance,

public utilities govt. & military operations. • In an industry besides the

production, other departments utilizing industrial management concepts are

Marketing, Finance, Purchasing, Industrial relations etc.

3. Major Application Of Industrial Management Pre- production Planning

6. Total Quality Management Total Quality Management Refers to maintaining

the quality of the goods produced, by setting up a standard and checking up the

produced parts as well as goods on a regular interval and if found deviation

from the standard than sending it back for maintenance so as to ensure quality,

quantity and functionality.

7. To Improve Process And Service 1. Finance 2. Marketing 3. Human

Resource(HR)

8. Design and Plant Layouts Industrial management helps in designing the plant

of the industry. Location of plant, machines and raw materials etc are managed

by IM so as to ensure the efficient production in minimum possible time &

maximum possible output.

9. Management of Material Handling System Management of material handling

system mean management of handling methods of materials. Industrial

Management helps by providing the method of scientific management to handle

materials and the methods used for handling materials is also studied thoroughly

and if needed any change is than made timely. Elimination of old and traditional

methods and introduction of new methods.

10. Labor Management Labor management is done by many methods, such as

selecting efficient labour. Selection and training from time to time, skill

development elimination of old methods and introduction of new and efficient

method.
11. Conclusion So we come to know that Industrial management helps industry

to grow at faster rate by giving maximum output in minimum possible cost.

Ensures Best and Maximum utilization of resources.

Important Characteristics or Features of Management | Management

This article provides information about the important characteristics or features

of management!

1. Management is goal oriented process:

Management always aims at achieving the organisational objectives.

The functions and activities of manager lead to the achievement of

organisational objectives; for example, if the objective of a company is to sell

1000 computers then manager will plan the course of action, motivate all the

employees and organise all the resources keeping in mind the main target of

selling 1000 computers.

2. Management is Pervasive:

Management is a universal phenomenon. The use of management is not

restricted to business firms only it is applicable in profit-making, non-profit-

making, business or non-business organisations; even a hospital, school, club

and house has to be managed properly. Concept of management is used in the

whole world whether it is USA, UK or India.

3. Management is Multidimensional:

Management does not mean one single activity but it includes three main

activities:

i. Management of work

ii. Management of people

iii. Management of operations

(a) Management of work:

All organisations are set up to perform some task or goal. Management

activities aim at achieving goals or tasks to be accomplished. The task or work

depends upon the nature of Business for example, work to be accomplished in a

school is providing education, in hospital is to treat patient, in industry to

manufacture some product. Management makes sure that work is accomplished

effectively and efficiently.

(b) Management of people:

People refer to Human resources and Human resources are the most important

assets of an organisation. An organisation can win over competitor with

efficient employees only because two organisations can have same physical,
technological and financial resources but not human resources. Management has

to get task accomplished through people only.

Managing people has two dimensions:

(i) Taking care of employee’s individual needs

(ii) Taking care of group of people

(c) Management of operations:

Operations refer to activities of production cycle such as buying inputs,

converting them into semi-finished goods, finished goods.

Management of operations concentrates on mixing management of work with

management of people, i.e., deciding what work has to be done, how it has to be

done and who will do it.

4. Management is a continuous process:

Management is a continuous or never ending function. All the functions of

management are performed continuously, for example planning, organising,

staffing, directing and controlling are performed by all the managers all the
time. Sometimes, they are doing planning, then staffing or organising etc.

Managers perform ongoing series of functions continuously in the organisation.

5. Management is a group activity:

Management always refers to a group of people involved in managerial

activities. The management functions cannot be performed in isolation. Each

individual performs his/her role at his/her status and department, and then only

management function can be executed.

Management is a group activity

Even the result of management affects every individual and every department of

the organisation so it always refers to a group effort and not the individual effort

of one person.

6. Management is a dynamic function:

Management has to make changes in goal, objectives and other activities

according to changes taking place in the environment. The external environment

such as social, economical, technical and political environment has great

influence over the management.

As changes take place in these environments, same are implemented in

organisation to survive in the competitive world.

7. Intangible:

Management function cannot be physically seen but its presence can be felt.

The presence of management can be felt by seeing the orderliness and

coordination in the working environment. It is easier to feel the presence of

mismanagement as it leads to chaos and confusion in the organisation.

For example, if the inventory of finished products is increasing day by day it

clearly indicates mismanagement of marketing and sales.

8. Composite process:

Management consists of series of functions which must be performed in a

proper sequence. These functions are not independent of each other.

They are inter-dependent on each other. As the main functions of management

are planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling; organising cannot

be done without doing planning, similarly, directing function cannot be

executed without staffing and planning and it is difficult to control the activities

of employees without knowing the plan. All the functions inter-dependent on

each other that is why management is considered as a composite process of all

these functions.

9. Balancing effectiveness and efficiency:

Effectiveness means achieving targets and objectives on time. Efficiency refers

to optimum or best utilisation of resources. Managements always try to balance

both and get the work done successfully. Only effectiveness and only efficiency

is not enough for an organisation: a balance must be created in both.

effectiveness and efficiency

For example, if the target of an employee is to produce 100 units in one month

time and achieving the target by wasting resources and mishandling the

machinery, will not be in the interest of organisation. On the other hand, if the

employee spends lot of time in handling the machine carefully and managing

the resources carefully and fails to complete the target on time, it will also not

be in the interest of organisation. Manager sees to it that this target is achieved

on time-and with optimum use of resources.

Management as a profession

A profession is a form of occupation in which a person renders his/her services

after acquiring expertise in a particular domain. The professional is remunerated

by the company for which he/she renders the services.

The profession involves a contract between a company and the professional for

a specific period, and the entry factors for the role are limited by various factors.

The significant factors of professions which are familiar to Management are

Formal Education and systems – Like any profession, Management contains

formal levels of education and building systems to reach desired positions. To

join the Management of large corporations, students join and excel in degrees

like BBA, MBA, etc.

Restricted entry – Entry to any management role is possible only for candidates

with certain set entry criteria. These criteria include educational qualifications,

experience, efficiency, knowledge of specific software, etc.

Code of conduct and associations – Management, like any other profession,

contains a code of conduct and ethics that every manager has to abide by. The

presence of various management associations is there, which regulates and

certifies managers for specific skills.

Management as a Social Science

It is reasonable to say business and management are both social sciences. The

definition of social sciences refers to the study of humans and their

relationships. In both management and business, people and relationships are

very important.

A large part of successful management includes dealing with other people.

Managers must deal with their workers. There are issues that arise, and how

they are resolved will affect productivity within the company. Managers must

also deal with the owners of the business. If a manager wants to stay employed,

it is critical to have a good relationship with the business owner. They also must

constantly develop relationships with suppliers and others in their given

industry. Social scientists can study many aspects of these relationships to help

guide people in managerial positions.

Any given business must also constantly cultivate relationships. Businesses

must maintain positive connections with their customers. Businesses must also

be seen a positive contributor to the city in which they operate. Successful

businesses usually work to develop good relationships with others. Social

scientists can also study these business relationships to learn what helps make

them successful. It is fair to say that both business and management fall into the

realm of the social sciences.

Management as an Art

The world of management is truly creative and full of theoretical aspects, easily

applicable to real-world situations. Interestingly, management is officially

qualified as an art. This is because it covers all the features required to be called

as an art. Thus, here we will study how and why we consider management as an

art. The world of arts requires a specific person to use his/her creativity and

apply personal skills in an exhaustive manner. Thus, once certain basic

principles are learned, the student is required to take them a step further and mix

their creativity.

The basic features of an art are:

 Creativity

 Innovation

 Value added services

 Initiative

 Skills of getting things done
