the consistent ability to perform particular task and duties to
the standard performance of the workplace. In other words,
your training will involve those tasks that are expected from
you to do when you are now working in the workplace.
What is beautiful in your training is the recognition of prior
learning meaning that if you are capable of demonstrating the
unit of competency that is required because of previous
training and work experiences, you don’t have to undergo the
same training again. What we are going to do is just to
evaluate what you can do against what is required from you
based on the Training Regulations.

I will be giving you 10 minutes to accomplish this. Please be

honest in answering the questions.

Can I have now the accomplished forms please? Thank you.

Our training delivery here is also different. Primarily we use 10 Principles of
Competency Based Training or CBT. CBT is a way of training CBT
that concentrates on what a worker can do or is required to
do at work. The aim of the training is to enable trainees to
perform tasks and duties at a standard expected by
employers. CBT seeks to develop the skills, knowledge and
attitudes (or recognize the ones the trainee already possesses)
to achieve the required Competency Standard. ASEAN has
adopted the CBT/CBA training system as it is able to produce
the type of worker that industry is looking for and this
therefore increases trainee chances of obtaining employment.
CBA involves collecting evidence and making a judgment of
the extent to which a worker can perform his/her duties at
the required Competency Standard. Where a trainee can
already demonstrate a degree of competency, either due to
prior training or work experience, a process of ‘Recognition of
Prior Learning’ (RPL) is available to trainees to recognize this.
Please speak to me about RPL if you think this applies to you.
To give more elucidation on the CBT, here are its 10
Principles
1. Training is based on the curriculum developed from
the competency standards.
CS is the written specification of the knowledge, skills
and attitudes required for the performance of a job,
occupation or trade and the corresponding standard of
performance required for these in the workplace.
The Competency Based curriculum is derived from the
CS.

2. Training is competency based or modular in structure.

Your course is composed of units of competency which
have its own competency based learning material and
other pertinent learning materials which we call
modules. A module is an instructional unit that
focuses on a particular content.

3. Training delivery is individualized and self-paced.

Earlier, I administered a Self-Assessment Checklist
and Learner’s Profile because this training will be
delivered at your own pace and will be tailored
individually.

4. Training is based on work that must be performed.

Remember that from the Training Regulations comes
from the industry. The CS is from Section 2 of the TR,
the CBC is derived from the CS and from the CBC will
come the CBLM and finally from the CBLM are the
Session Plans.

5. Training materials are directly related to the

competency standards and the curriculum. This is
explained earlier by Principle 4.

6. Assessment of Learners is based on the collection of

evidences of work performance based on the industry
or organizational required standards. As I have
explained earlier, when ASEAN adopted CBT, it also
adopted the CBA or Competency Based Assessment.

7. Training is based on and off the job components. Your

training will have a school and industry based
components

8. CBT allows recognition of Prior Learning. This is

already discussed earlier.

9. CBT allows for learner to enter and exit programs at

different times and levels and to receive an award for
competencies attained at any point.

10.Approved training programs are national accredited.

Anywhere you go within the Philippines, your training
is recognized as long as the program is registered by
the school with Unified TVET Program Registration and
Accreditation System.

Let’s move to my role as a trainer and your role as a learner.

As your trainer it is my responsibility to coordinate your
learning activities. It is also my responsibility to motivate you
whenever you don’t feel like to attend to your training. It
short, I will be guiding, assessing, evaluating and monitoring
your training.

Your role as a trainee is to be responsible for the acquisition

of the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes towards
making yourself competent. Learning rests on your shoulders
and not to anyone else. I will be treating you as adults. Such
being the case, you are the ones responsible for your own
learning.
Let’s talk about your course; Housekeeping NC II. This course Basic, Common
is designed to develop & enhance the knowledge, skills, & and Core
attitudes of a Housekeeper, in accordance with industry Competencies
standards. It covers the basic and common competencies in
addition to the core competencies such as to Provide
housekeeping services to guests, Clean and prepare room for
incoming guest, Laundry linen and guest clothes, Provide
valet and butler service, Clean public areas and Deal
with/handle intoxicated guests

Instead of subjects in traditional classroom, we have

competencies which are divided into Basic, Common and
Core.

Basic Competencies are competencies that are necessary in

order for a person to work. These basic competencies are

1. Participate in workplace communication

2. Work in a team environment
3. Practice career professionalism
4. Practice occupational health & safety

Your Common Competencies are competencies that are

necessary in order for a person to work in a certain sector. All
Tesda courses are grouped into sectors. There are 23 sectors
groupings in TVET. Your Course is under the Tourism Sector.
The following are your competencies under this sector:

1. Develop and update industry knowledge

2. Observe workplace hygiene procedures
3. Perform computer operations
4. Perform workplace and safety practices
5. Provide effective customer service

Now if you want to work specializing on housekeeping, you

need the following competencies in order to do so.

1. Provide housekeeping services to guests

2. Clean and prepare rooms for incoming guests
3. Provide valet/butler service
4. Laundry linen and guest clothes
5. Clean public areas, facilities and equipment
6. Deal with/handle intoxicated guests

Aside from these units of competencies which you will be

learning, your school will also require you to have at least 40
hours of on the job training so that you will have an exposure
in the real workplace.
As I have mentioned earlier, CBT also uses CBA or
Competency Based Assessment. After each unit of
competency, you will undergo an institutional assessment. As
long as you will not be certified as competent in each unit of
competency you already have undertaken, you cannot
proceed to the next unit of competency. If you have finished
all the units of competency and pass also the institutional
assessment, you are now ready for the national assessment.
No institutional assessment – no national assessment also.
This room houses all the training workshops that are
necessary for your training.

1. Practical Work Area – this area is where you are going

to acquire the skills and knowledge components of the
competency prescribed by the competency standard.
2. Learning Resource Area – this area will provide you
with the knowledge requirements in the modules. This
area houses an array of learning materials in print and
in soft copies.
3. Institutional Assessment Area – This area provides the
mechanism of assessing the completion of
competencies.
4. Contextual Learning Area – this area provides you with
the acquisition of knowledge, science, mathematics
and communication as applied to technology.
5. Trainers Resource Area – This area houses the learning
materials, TRs and CBC. This is also the area where
trainees produce the learning materials that you will be
using in this course.
6. Distance Learning Area – This area provides
accessibility of TVET materials through the use of the
internet.
Regarding your CBLM, the following are its major parts. This
personalized learning material is especially written to facility
your learning throughout your training with us. Please read
and understand fully the role that it will play in your training
process.
