Venus Chan - Calculating Density Practice Problems

The document provides examples of density practice problems and their solutions. It defines density as mass divided by volume (ρ=m/v) and shows how to use the density formula to calculate missing values when given the mass, volume, or density. There are 8 practice problems calculating density, volume, or mass when two of the three values are known. The total possible marks for the problems is 25.

Calculating Density Practice Problems

Use the following diagram to help you answer the questions below.

m
÷
ρ÷ x v

Where m = mass ρ= density v = volume

Hint: Using the diagram above, put your finger over the one you want to find out and you will see how to
work out the question.

1. A student measures the mass of an 8cm3 block of brown sugar to be 32g. What is the density of the
brown sugar? (3 marks)
32g ÷ 8cm3= 4g/cm3
2. A chef fills 50 cm3container with 250 g of cooking oil. What is the density of the oil?
250g ÷ 50cm3= 50g/cm3 (3marks)

3. A piece of cork has a mass of 24g and a density of 6g/cm3. What is the volume of the piece of cork?
(3marks)
24g ÷ 6g/cm3 =4g/cm3
4. A carver begins work on a block of granite that has volume of 1000 cm3 and a density of 5 g/cm3. What
is the mass of the block of granite? (3 marks)
1000cm3 x 5g/cm3= 5000g
5. A box has a volume of 55 cm3 and a density of 5g/cm3. What is the mass of the box?
55 cm3x 5g/cm3 =275g (3marks)

6. A wooden cylinder has a density of 4 g/cm3 and a mass of 48 cm3. What is the volume of the wooden
cylinder? (3 marks)
48cm3 ÷ 4 g/cm3 =12cm3
7. A wooden block has a volume of 12 cm3 and a density of 3 g/cm3. What is the mass of the wooden
block?
12 cm3÷ 3 g/cm3 =4g (3 marks)
8. An ice block measuring 5cm by 5 cm by 5cm has a density of 5g/cm3. What is the mass of the ice
block? (4 marks)

125 cm3÷ 5g/cm3 = 25g

TOTAL 25 marks
