STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Mahmud Hasan Akash

(Applicant for Ph.D. Program in Statistics & Data Science under the Department of Mathematics & Statistic,
University of Nevada, Reno)
“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one
thing” -Abraham
Lincoln.
This writing delineates my academic career, research interests, achievements as well as my future
goals & plans. Also, it explains my motivation for applying to the Ph.D program at the department of
Statistics & Data Science in The University of Nevada, Reno to prepare myself for my long term goal
of pursuing a career of research in the industry.
Growing up in a middle class family, I have experieced almost all the challenges in life. There were
ups as well as downs. But one thing always remained a major source of pure happiness to me;
Numbers & Mathematices. From the very beginning of my student life, I had a keen interent in
Mathematics. I loved numbers. In my School & College life, I was always one of the bests in my
batch when it came down to maths and physics. Passion for maths landed me to the Bangladesh
National Mathematics Olympiad where I was ranked among the top 12 secondary contestants in the
whole country. Naturally, to pursue my academic career in mathemaitcs related subject, I chose to
study Engineering.
Being a top ranked student since my school and college, I kept achieving academic excellence which
led me to the best engineering institution of my country, Bangladesh University of Engineering and
Technology (BUET). There I got chance in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) Department
which was ranked the number-1 department at that time. However, in my progression of my
undergraduate study, I faced some hurdles in life. There were some family issues as well as some
personal issues which ultimately led to an unsatisfactory result. I achieved 2.993 Cumulative Grade
Point Average (CGPA). But this result does not represent my true capability. In my defense, I can
state my graduation term’s result. In my graduation term, I tried to concentrate fully on study and I
achieved CGPA 3.48. Moreover, my GRE and TOEFL scores are in support of my statement. I
scored 321 in GRE (Quantitative-170, Verbal-151 and AWA 3.5) and 105 in TOEFL (26-Reading,
28-Listening, 27-Speaking, 24-Writing).
During my Under-graduate, I tried to take part in multiple projects related to my academic courses.
Some of the projects that I took part in were Smart House, Automated Robot for Restaurant etc. In
the Smart house project, me and my team members built a house model inside which everything was
automated. In my Automated Robot for Restaurant Project, we built a line following robot which
could take up-to 3 simultaneous orders and could serve accordingly. During these projects, I had the
opportunity to learn & practice multiple software including MATLAB, PSpice etc. I did my under-
graduate thesis under Mr. Hamidur Rahman who is an Associate Professor in the Electrical &
Electronic Department. The topic of my thesis was “Magnetic Levitated (MagLev) Train, It’s
Prospect in Bangladesh”. In my thesis, I showed the possibility of establishing a MagLev Train in
Bangladesh and the associated Technologies. The main technology behind the proposed MagLev
train was EDS (Electro Dynamic System). I showed a proposal project outline by which, by 2030,
the first MagLev Train Project in Bangladesh could be established by adequate Government Funding
and using the existing Technology of our country.
At present, I am working as an Engineering Consultant and Team Leader in a renowned consultancy
firm in Bangladesh namely Utility Professionals. Here I have worked in more than 10 projects
including Rampal-1320 MW Ultra Super Critical Coal Fired Power Plant, Matarbari 1320 MW Ultra
Super Critical Coal Fired Power Plant, Dhaka Metro Rail, Development Project Proposal (DPP) for
Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL) [Only Government Controlled Pharmaceutical Company
in Bangladesh] Dhaka Project (New) etc. During the timeline of doing these projects, I had to learn a
lot of new topics related to Data analysis. I oversee preparing the calculations related to our design
works. In this way, I have learned to analyze data. Up until now, I have not lost a single opportunity
to learn something new even if it does not concern my department. I have a genuine knack of
learning something new each and every moment. Even now, after coming back to my home from
work, I try to spend a considerable amount of time in learning new things. Generally, I use most of
the time on Mathematical modelling and practicing Python as I strongly believe that it will help me
pursuing my higher studies in Data Science.

I really want to develop my technical knowledge based on mathematical modeling and numerical
simulation. I am also interested in research which combines both analytical solutions and
experimental skills. I am really interested in the topics of Data Science. That’s why, I am interested
in studying Data Analysis with Statistics, Data Mining, Data Assimilation, Machine Learning, Big
Data analysis, Conditional Probability etc. My dream is to see myself as a Data Science PhD
candidate in University of Nevada Reno and do extensive research work. The Department of
Mathematics & Statistics houses a multitude of specialists in all the fields in which I am eager to
study, especially Dr. Andrey Saranstev with whom my research interests coincide. I am
passionately following his publications & research works on Probability Theory, Statistics & Data
Analysis. I think that the PhD Program in Statistics & Data Science under UNR Department of
Mathematics & Statistics will provide me the proper transition between my achievements and my
future academic goals.
To conclude, I know that pursuing a PhD degree in Data Science is one of the toughest challenges
today. However, because of my love and passion for Mathematics, I am ready to take the challenge.
It is my dream to pursue my PhD degree in the University of Nevada, Reno as it provides state of
the art Data Science Doctoral Program. It is my desired hope that the admission committee will find
me as an admirable student for the Data Science Doctoral program.
