The document analyzes and summarizes the movie poster for "Moonlight" based on its visual elements. It notices that the poster features three images of the same man at different ages, representing the main character's life journey from boyhood to adulthood. Each image provides clues about that stage of the character's life, such as childhood innocence for the boy and freedom and sophistication for the adult. The use of various shades of blue in the poster is also analyzed as possibly symbolizing the emotions and lessons associated with the different phases of the character's life. Applying Visual Elements
For this assignment of “Applying Visual Elements” I chose the movie “Moonlight” due to its notoriety
of being awarded the Oscar in 2017 for Best Film, over the heavily favored “La La Land”. Although it is very high
profile, I have never seen this movie, so I figured that analyzing its promotional poster may give me an idea of
what this film is about and will encourage me to actually go see it someday. Sure enough, after examining the
poster, I can visualize the gist of the movie through the use of the visual arts that are presented. When you
first look at the poster, you will immediately notice the image of black man, as it almost takes up the entire
space. Due to this image, I can infer that this is the main character in which the movie will focus on. But as you
look closely it is not just one man, but three different people in the shape of the one person. The three different
people look alike, just with varying ages. You can see that from in the left is a young boy, in the middle a
teenager, and on the right is a fully grown adult. This has led me to believe that the overall movie centers on
one man that is followed at different times throughout his life to become what he is now.
Right away there is a lot to analyze about the three different faces of the one man. I could tell that the
left most person is only just a boy due to his face. Unlike the other two, it is the one that looks the youngest
with no wrinkles, scars, or a beard. I also noticed that it is the side where he is wearing clothes. This makes me
think that he is sheltered and protected in some way, maybe through his parents. The shirt is plain and he has
no jewelry unlike in the case of the right-most person, which leads me to believe that he is not from an upper-
class family. Now with the person in the middle, I can infer that this is a teenager due to its placement of being
in the center, between the boy and the adult man. This may have been a turbulent time in his life, as this person
has many scars with one on his nose and on the forehead. You could also see a bit of anger or sadness with this
face, due to the way his eyebrow is scrunched up. This makes me visualize that this certain part in his life is
where he has received the most hardship and is almost like the turning point that led to the man on the right.
The adult man on the right, is certainly the one with the most differences. From what I have gathered, this may
have been from the culmination of experiences from the two pictures on the left. He has a beard, a hat, as well
as what seems to be a diamond earring. I presume that in this version of himself, he is much more comfortable
and is making money that he can spend on nice things. It is also very evident that he is topless on this side,
which may signify freedom in doing whatever he wants, as he is now an adult.
This movie poster also makes great use of color with the main theme being very blue. Blue can often
be associated with sadness and responsibility, so I can understand that this film is not a comedy and deals with
more serious issues that can cause feelings of sorrow. However, blue may also symbolize many things such as
serenity, calmness, and wisdom, which can come from the things that the main character has learned
throughout his life which I assume is the main plot of the film, as I have stated before. Not only that, but the
artist makes use of various shades of blue. I feel like it is so that it wouldn’t be very dull or flat, but there may
also be some reasoning behind the shades of blue that was used. I have already talked about the different
phases about his life and the characteristics on their appearances, but with each division there is a certain
shade of blue that can represent that point in the man’s life. With the boy, the color is almost a bluish-green.
The green can represent growth like a plant, and as we all know, the main part of a kid’s childhood is dealing
with having to grow up. For the one with the teenager, the color is like a purple which is made by mixing blue
and red. The red can symbolize the teenage angst that is evident with the blood from his scars, as well as the
anger that he appears to feel. For the adult, it may have been a conscious decision to pair with the darker blue
and black. Black usually signifies sophistication and power, which can be interpreted to what the adult has now
achieved. While black can also signify mystery, it makes use of that meaning to make the viewer wonder what
had happened to him to be what he is now.
Overall, I am in awe of this poster. Visually, it is stunning, but all of the visual elements have a certain
meaning that correlates to what the movie “Moonlight” is about. After reading the summary of the movie, I
can safely say that I had made the right deductions. I am surprised that my initial thoughts of what the movie
was about were actually very close to the plot. In general, it seems to me that movie posters are an artform in
itself. Before, I would just look at it without a care in the world, but I now have great respect for the people
who actually put it together. They gathered their ideas and put thought into the posters to attract viewers into
watching the movie, without giving too many spoilers away, while also being very pleasing to the eye. I
commend them for that.
