Lab # 9

The document outlines a lab experiment to examine and draw the external features of a fish gill under a magnifying glass. Students are instructed to gently lift the operculum and cut out the gill, placing it in a petri dish of water to observe and draw. They then calculate the magnification of the drawing and note any differences observed when the gill is placed in and out of water, relating these observations to gaseous exchange. The conclusion evaluates students' drawings based on clarity, accuracy, labelling, title, and correct magnification.

DATE: LAB NUMBER: TITLE: Respiration in fish

AIM: To draw the external features of a fish gill

APPARATUS and MATERIALS: magnifying glass, ruler, pencil, fish

METHOD:

1. Examine a dead fish. Lift the operculum gently and cut the gill neatly with a scissors.
Place the gill in a petri dish containing water. Make a suitable annotated drawing of
the gill and calculate the magnification. Remove the gill and place out of water.
Record observations.

RESULTS:
CALCULATIONS:

Using the following equation, calculate the Magnification for your drawing:
Magnification = Drawing Length (cm) = x ___________ (no units, as cm cancels
out)
Actual Length (cm)
DISCUSSION:

Define gaseous exchange:

________________________________________________________

Identify the characteristics that can be seen in the drawing that allow the gills to function as
an efficient gaseous exchange surface.

___________________________________________________________________________
_

What difference was observed when the gill was placed in water as compared to out of
water. How would the difference observe impact gaseous exchange?
