Background Information for Learners

 Line – is a set of all points arranged in a row.

SUBSETS OF A LINE:
a. RAY – subset of a line that has only one endpoint and extends endlessly in one direction (arrowhead).
– we name the ray by its endpoint and one of its point, always starts on the end point.

A B C

This is ray AB. We can also name it as ray AC.


In symbol, we write AB or AC.
The points A, B, and C are on ray AC.

X Y Z

This is ray ZY. We can also name it as ray ZX.


In symbol we write ZY or ZX.
We do NOT write it as XZ as it should be named starting from the endpoint.
The points X, Y, and Z are on ray ZY.

b. LINE SEGMENT – a subset of a line that has two endpoints.

K L M N

KN is a line segment. The points L and M are on the line segment KN.
In symbol, KN. We can also name it NK
We also have line segments KL, LM, and MN.

Study the following examples:


 Congruent Segments – are segments that are equal in length.

If the line to which a line segment belongs is given a scale that it turns into a real number line, then the
length of the segment can be determined by getting the distance between its endpoints.
The length of segment AD = | – |
= | – |

= 3 units
The length of segment EC = | – |
= | – |

= 3 units

Therefore: AD and EC are congruent segments.

Union/Intersection of Segments and Rays

BC ∩ ED is the set of all points common to ray BC and ray ED. The common points are the points on
