The teacher had their first day back in the classroom after break. They attended staff meetings, planned lessons with other teachers, and taught their own lessons on phonics, vocabulary, and more. Some lessons went well while others required adjustments due to issues with online learning. The teacher is gaining more confidence and experience.

First day back from break! It felt so nice to be back in the classroom and seeing
everyone. It feels so good to be back in the classroom. I feel so excited and energized
by the new year and the fact that I will be taking over and really getting to plan and
teach.

Staff meeting, grade group meeting to plan curriculum as a 2nd grade team, and pm
planning with Mrs. Shapiro. This was such a great experience to see the inner workings
of a school. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. We met via zoom with a cyber
school to get some ideas and tips on how to teach effectively while virtual. I found many
of the strategies to be ones that I have started using, which made me feel great! I wrote
down some new methods that I would like to incorporate into next week’s lessons.

Taught morning meeting. Students made great connections between the question of
the day(What advice would you give these children if you saw them on the playground?)
and the story that we are starting to read called Pepita and the Bully. Came up with an
idea to discuss what they know about the number of the day by having them share ways
to create the number using addition and subtraction. Worked with small group on
personal narratives. The group required extra assistance in adding details and
sequencing. First official whole class lesson went well! Introduced digraphs and the
sounds that they make. We will work on this for the entire week.

Beginning to feel more comfortable teaching whole class lessons. In small group, was
able to address 2 students that were off task and was able to get them on task. During
afternoon group, I had a student that I have been working with address me directly to
show say “Mrs. Kibler, you told me to keep working and adding to my story and I did it.”
He held up his writing notebook to show me. This made my day!! Taught
phonics/spelling. Felt comfortable allowing pauses in between to model the sound of
each digraph and asking students to try to make the sounds.

Today was my first time teaching vocabulary. I was happy with how it went! We came
up with a new way to present vocabulary and I think that it is something that we will
continue using. Timing of the lesson was a little off because we were having so many
zoom issues. I had to put a few things aside(some spelling words) so I plan to add those
to tomorrow’s lesson.
and I think that a lot of this was due to the group size being so small and the fact that
we worked through each problem together.

Today was the 100th day of school. We had a virtual field trip, which the students
seemed to enjoy very much. We had Link It testing in the afternoon. Some of the
students’ scores do not match what we see in class. Some of them scored basic when
they are more advanced in class. They seem to be burned out by all of the testing. This
was something that I found interesting to see. Testing is new to me and I assumed that
the tests results would match the classroom results.
