4d ESP Design Tutorial - Answers

This document provides an example design for an ESP system to pump fluid from 7,000 feet underground at a rate of 1,400 barrels per day. It calculates that 81 psi of pressure would be lost to pipe friction. The total pressure required at the pump is calculated to be 3,162 psi. It is determined that 86 stages of pumping would be needed, requiring a 45 horsepower motor. The pump speed is selected to be 2,915 rpm for simplicity.

Total pressure required above pump ΔPd =Pm +ΔPf +ΔPHH

gPd = 50 + 81 + (0.433 psi/ft) (7000 ft) = 3162 psi
PIn = PR - Q/PI
Flowing Bottom Hole Pressure:-

Example ESP Design
Example ESP Design

• Head per stage at 1400 b/d is 58 ft

Example ESP Design

• Head per stage at 1400 b/d is 58 ft

• Power per stage at 1400 b/d is 0.52 BHP
Example ESP Design
Number of pump stages (N) required & motor power @ 2,915 rpm

Pd -PIn  psi   3162-1000

N= = = 86stages
H  ft  *0.433  psi/ft  58*0.433

• HHP = 86 (stages)*0.52 (BHP/stage)*(gf) = 45 HHP

{no correction for fluid density (gf) is required}
• The pump electric motor may now be chosen.
• Allow for power loses in the motor & oversize to
increase run life
• Choosing a pump speed other than 2,915 rpm
introduces extra complications
Pump rate of an ESP is proportional to the speed
