Antitussives and Expectorants

Acetylcysteine B
Brand name：

Indication：
Adjunctive mucolytic therapy; antidote for acute
acetaminophen toxicity.
Dosage：
Granule-
Adults: 200mg tid.
Children: 100 or 200mg bid~qid.
Acetaminophen poisoning-
Children and Adults: Oral 140 mg/kg, then
17 dose of 70mg/kg every 4 hrs.
Syrup-(1ml = 20mg)
Childn 2 yrs: 2.5 ml, 2-6 yrs: 5 ml, > 6 yrs: 10
cc, tid.
Effervescent (勿磨粉)
一天1~2 次(晚上服用佳)
Side effect：
Vomiting, unpleasant odor during administration,
drowsiness, nausea, irritation, bronchospasm.
Precaution：
If bronchospasm progress, discontinue acetyl
cysteine.
Bromhexine HCl
Brand name：
Wincou(bisolvon) 8mg/tab 醫令碼：OBISO
Indication：
Bronchial mucolytic, expectorant.
Dosage：
Adults: 8-16mg 3 times daily.
Childn <3-6 years: 1/4 tab tid.
Childn 6-12 years: 4mg qid.
Contraindication：
Gastric ulcer.
Side effect：
Nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, liver
dysfunction.
Precaution：
Can dissociate gastric mucosal barrier.
Ambroxol HCl
Brand name：
Ambroxol 30mg/tab 醫令碼：OAMBR
Indication：
Expectorant.
Dosage：
Adults and children > 12 yrs: 30mg tid.
Childn 6-12 yrs: 15mg tid.
Side effect：
Dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, heartburn.
Precaution：
1. Ambroxol is bromhexine of active metabolite.
2. Be careful to use in pregnant (the 􀀁rimesters
gestation).
3. 本品含阿斯巴甜，苯酮尿症患者不宜使用.

Contraindication：
Severe respiratory depression, serious liver
dysfunction, acute alcoholism, constipation.
Side effect：

Precaution：
1. Produce addictive.
2. Avoid using in pregnant.
Hydropropizine

Indication：
Antitussive, expectorant.
Dosage：
30mg tid-qid.
Precaution：
投與高劑量時，可能引起腎上腺激素樣(如起
立性高血壓)。

Indication：
Antitussive, expectorant (bronchiectasis,
asthmatic bronchitis, acute/chronic bronchitis,
flu).
Dosage：
Adults: 50-100 mg tid.
Childn 1-2 yrs: 10-20mg tid.
3-5 yrs: 20-30mg tid.
6-9 yrs: 30-45mg tid.
Side effect：
GI disturbances, headache.
Benzonatate

Side effect：

Children-
<4 years: Not for OTC use
4-6 years (syrup): Oral: 2.5-7.5 mg every 4-8
hours; extended release is 15 mg twice daily
(maximum: 30 mg/24 hours).
6-12 years: 5-10 mg every 4 hours or 15 mg every
6-8 hours; extended release is 30 mg twice daily
(maximum: 60 mg/24 hours).
Children >12 years: Refer to adult dosing.
Adult:10-20 mg every 4 hours or 30 mg every 6-8
hours; extended release: 60 mg twice
daily;maximum: 120 mg/day.
Contraindication：
Concomitant use or use within 14 days of MAOI.
Side effect：
Drowsiness, nausea, vomiting.
Precaution：
1.Overdose can produce hyperkalemia.
2.Do not use for persistent or chronic cough.

7-12 yrs: 5-10mg q4h or 15mg q6-8hr.

Injection: only IM
Adult: 0.5-1ml qd ~ bid
Contraindication：
Concomitant use or use within 14 days of MAOI.
Side effect：
Drowsiness, coma, respiratory depression, GI
upset, abdominal discomfort.
Precaution：
1. Use in children <12 years of age has not been
proven safe and effective.
2. Injection 限安寧病房使用。
3. Do not use for persistent or chronic cough, or
for cough accompanied by excessive secretion.
Codin-P syrup C

Indication：

Dosage：
Childn < 2 years: 1ml/time, 2-3 years: 2ml/time,
4-6 years: 3ml/time, 7-11 years: 4ml/time, 12-14
year 5ml/time, > 15 years: 10ml/time, tid.
Contraindication：
MAOI, Alcohol.
Side effect：
Nausea, vomiting, sedation.

Secorine syrup
Each ml contains:

Chlorpheniramine Maleate

Indication：
緩解感冒之各種症狀 (流鼻水、鼻塞、打噴嚏、
咽喉痛、發燒、頭痛、關節痛、肌肉痛)。
Dosage：
Adults: 10ml tid-qid.
Childn: 5ml tid-qid.
Side effect：
輕微思睡。
