Instructions: Read one of the three articles and accomplish the Metacognitive Reading
Report.

 Caoli, Olivia “A History of Science and Technology of the Philippines” in


analysis of conditions for national scientific and technological self-reliance: the
Philippine Situation. Quezon City: University of the Philippines Press, 1986.

1. Difficult Concepts 

a. Why the government did not support Science and Technology in the
Philippines, when it was for the future and the betterment of the country and
its countrymen.

 
b. Lack of learning institutes and education here in the Philippines,and who
really helped nurture it: The Spaniards or the Americans?
 
c. Archaeological finds and trades and inventions during the Pre-Colonial
Period.

2. Learning Insights

a. Before reading the article, I thought that


Science and Technology did not become a thing here in the
Philippines until the technological advancement where the computers
came in.

However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that

A lot of developments in Science and Technology hadoccur even


before the Spaniards colonized the Philippine

b. Before reading the article, I thought that


The schools back then were already equipped with the
necessaryamenities and such.
However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that

So many of the schools mentioned wereill-equipped and lacked


amenities such as biological laboratories,chemical laboratories, libraries
etc.

c. Before reading the article, I thought that


This is about how the Philippines modernized, like is the
contribution ofcolonization in term of technology or what's in our mind a
thing. Something that is only tangible, something that we can touch or
use.

However, after reading the article, I now think/learned that

this is something about the development of science and technology


in the Philippines, this talks about the foundation, the building, on how
our country modernized and being able to decentralized in terms of
economy, which involve different industries,education, technology,
government and science. And how all of this innovate within the
colonialism.

3. Discussion Questions
 
a. Without colonialism do you think it is possible that Philippines
will have this kind of Status in terms of Science and Technology?
 
b. Why do you think Philippine government did not pay attention that
much in developing science and technology at the time of Spanish and
American colonialism?
 
c. Is it possible for the country to not focus on education but still
developing?
