Steps to take for using MATLAB using the

central KU Leuven license server

The use of the MATLAB license server is restricted to KU Leuven personnel of the participating research
groups.

The use of the MATLAB software using the central KU Leuven license server requires the registration of
the computer that will use the MATLAB software. The MATLAB software needs to be installed and the
reference to the KU Leuven license server must be correct.

If you are trying to use MATLAB without registering, MATLAB will not start and show this message. (this
message will appear after some time, some patience is needed):

Step 1: Register your userid (u-number) at your local MATLAB-

responsible
In order to be able to use MATLAB on your computer, your KU Leuven userid must be registered. Your
local MATLAB responsible can do this.

Step 2: Register your computer for using MATLAB:

Surf to:

Icts.kuleuven.be/license

1
If your userid is not yet registered, you will get the following screen after login:

If your userid is correctly registered in the MATLAB user database, the following screen will show up:

Fill out the correct IP address of your computer.

It is however important to fill out the correct hostname (case-sensitive!!) of your computer. Depending
on the operating system, you can find this by:

2
 Windows
o open the command window and type the command hostname.

o Copy the hostname to the registration page.

Tip: in the dos command window, you can copy a slection by right clicking into the
window en select mark from the popup. Select the text to copy and end the process by
pushing the enter button. Paste the text with ctrl-v or paste in the right field.

 Linux
o open terminal and use the command hostname (idem for mac)

3
 Mac
o Open System Preferences (Systeemvoorkeuren) and choose Sharing pane (Delen)

4
After completing the data fields, you will get a confirmation that your computer is activated.

After a few moments (max a fewminutes), you will be able to use MATLAB on that computer.

Troubleshooting?!

If my computer changes ip-address, do I need to register the Yes, the registration holds as long as
computer again? your ip-address or hostname does
not change.

Do I need to register my computer on a daily basis? No, normally your registration will
last as long as you do not change
anything. If you are working on
another computer, you will need to
register that other computer.

What happens when I register another computer? The previously registered computer
will be de-registered and will not be
able to connect to the license server
until registered again.

It used to work, MATLAB could be started, but now I cannot get a Try to register your computer again,
license?! may be the license server was
restarted and some of the data was
lost. Or it can be that all the licenses
are checked out, then you will have
to wait until a license is available
again in the pool.

My computer is registered, but I get an error ‘39’ In this case there is a problem with
the hostname, the ip-address is OK.
Possible causes can be:

5
 Typing error, go back and
register your computer
again.
 Domain name (add it)
If you registered the
hostname, it is possible that
the domain name of your
dept./group was added. Try
to register your hostname
with the domain name .
ex.
compname.icts.kuleuven.be
 Domain name (remove it)
If you registered the host
name with the domain
name included, it is possible
that the domein name is
stripped. Try in this case to
register the hostname
without the domain name.
My computer is registered, but I receive an error ‘96’ In this case, there is a problem with
the ip-address.
Check your IP address and try to
register your computer again.
