Protection Relay Coordination

The document discusses protection relay coordination for electrical power systems. Proper protection and relaying is important to ensure continuity of service during normal operation but also allow isolation of faults to prevent damage. Short circuit studies must be performed prior to selecting equipment and relays. The type of protection needed depends on the complexity of the system, ranging from simple fuses for radial systems to more advanced differential and directional relays for larger interconnected systems. The seminar topics will provide an orientation on the basic requirements for a safe and reliable electrical system, including overcurrent protection and coordination of protection devices.

PROTECTION RELAY COORDINATION

BENIGNO S. JIMENEZ, PEE

POWER SYSTEM CONSULTANT
DELTA POWER ENGINEERING & CONSULTING

ABSTRACT

Designing an electrical system is easy and simple if only the normal

operation of the network is taken into consideration. However, abnormal
conditions are likely to occur anytime. Short circuits, either by equipment
failures or human error may result to a costly downtime and serious
damage to equipment. Hence, the design must not only be made simple but
most importantly, safe and reliable. A safe and reliable power system is
one that can sustain operation even during abnormal situations. It must
operate continuously during normal and healthy overload situations but
trip expeditiously to isolate the affected parts of the system during fault
conditions.

Short-Circuit Study shall be done. It is a prerequisite prior to the

specification of electrical equipments and protective devices.

Appropriate power system protection and protective relaying must be

employed. It must be properly designed and coordinated to ensure;
continuity and reliability of service, ease of maintenance and
troubleshooting, safety to equipment and operators. The type and quality
of protective relaying required to a substation is proportional to the
substation complexity. A simple fuse and overcurrent relay maybe the only
one required of a simple radial system, but differential and directional
relays are required of the larger double-ended substation system.

This seminar is the first of a series that will suffice to orient the
electrical practitioner of the basic requirement of a safe and reliable
electrical system.
