Grid Preparation in Simulation

Grid preparation in reservoir simulation involves dividing the reservoir model into discrete grid blocks to solve fluid flow equations. Structured grids use rectangular blocks but can cause boundary issues, while unstructured grids can match any geometry but require more data storage. The primary goal of gridding is to discretize the geological model so fluid flow can be calculated. Grid type is chosen based on factors like generation ease, memory needs, precision, and resolution requirements.

RESERVOIR SIMULATION

Grid Preparation in Simulation

Simulation of reservoir is the study for digital description of reservoir with combination of
both physical and mathematical equations by good reservoir engineering in order to predict
the future performance of reservoir. Also simulation of reservoir deals with solving group of
equations and computer programming called “simulator”. Reservoir simulation can be
presented by grid block model where each of these blocks shows a local part of the reservoir,
the properties within those grids are uniform because they might change with time. And those
blocks are connected to each other that fluids can be flow between them, from one block to
another block at a rate measured by difference in pressure between blocks and properties of
flow allocate to the interface between blocks and for every interface between blocks a group
of equation must be solved in order to calculate the flow for all phases, so those equation
include ( Darcy’s equation, Material Balance equation, as much as permeability between
blocks, relative permeability, viscosity, and rock and fluid properties ). In order to prepare
the grid model we need reservoir fluids data (PVT) and description of our reservoir, also fluid
distribution in space. Gridding is a process of modeling the region by divides it into a group
of small control volumes, and each of these volumes there have one or more values which
depend on (pressure, velocity, and temperature……..etc). The primary objective of
generation gridding in reservoir simulation is to build the discrete system from geological
model which fluid flow equation can be solved, so we first subdivide the geological model
into three sections of ( x, y, z ). In general we have to type of grids:
Structured grid which means that the volume of blocks are well ordered, and using the
simple scheme to label blocks and identify neighbor blocks. We have a several type of
structured grid, based on the shape of their blocks. And the simple one is rectangular blocks
like a box but the disadvantages of this grid that when we approximate the geometric surface
by remove the entire blocks, and this cause that boundary having the separate steps, and
causing in flow losses and other unwanted effects.
Unstructured grids which mean that blocks in difference volumes can be connected to each
other and the list of special blocks must be used in order to identify the neighboring blocks.
The advantage of this type is that it can be built to adjust with nearly any desirable geometry.
But it also have the disadvantages because generation of grids by this way comes with price
and as more as needs more information to stored and recovered. The most popular type is
tetrahedral.
To sum it, is that the best grid system can be chosen based on (suitability in generation,
memory requests, numerical precision, region with high or low resolution, and so on.
