This document contains solutions to physics problems involving machines. It calculates the input mechanical advantage (IMA), actual mechanical advantage (AMA), and efficiency for various machines. The problems involve lifting loads using devices like wheels and axles, hydraulic jacks, presses, and chain hoists. The document determines values like the force required to lift a load, the AMA, IMA, and efficiency based on given information like load weights, distances moved, diameters of wheels/pulleys, and applied forces.

1. A motor furnishes 120hp to a device that lifts a 5000kg load to a

height pf 13.0m in a time of 20s, find thr efficiency of the machine
Ans:
Work output : (5000 x 9,81) (13m) = 637
Power output : work output / time taken
: 637/20
: 31,85 Kw
Power input : 120 hp (0,476 /1) = 89,5kw
Efficiency : power output / power input
: 31,85 / 89,5 x 100%
: 36 %

2. Refer back to fig 7-2(d) if a force of 200N is required to lift a 50kg

load, find the IMA, AMA and efficiency for the system
Ans :
A. IMA = 200N / 50
=4
B. AMA = 25
C. Efficiency = AMA / IMA
= 61%

3. In fig 7-7 the 300N load is balanced by a force F in both system,

assuming efficiencies of 100 percent, how large is F in each system?
Assume all ropes to be vertical
Ans :
A. 100N
B. 75,0N
4. With a certain machine, the applied force moves 3.3 m to raise a load
8,0 cm , find the (a) IMA and (b) AMA if the effciency is 60%
What load can be lifted by an applied force of 50N if the efficiency is
(c) 100% and (d) 60 percent
Ans :

A. IMA = distance moves by F / distance moves by fw

= 2 R/ R – r
= 3.3 / 8.0
= 41

B. AMA = 41 × 60
= 2,460
= 25

C. Efficiency
100% = power output / power input
100% = output / 50 N
= 2,1 kN
D. 1,2 kN

5. With a wheel and axle, a force of 80N applied to the rim of the
wheel can lift a load of 640N, the diameters of the wheel and
axle are 36cm and 4.0 cm , respectively, determine the AMA ,
IMA, and efficiency of them machine
Ans :

A. AMA = 80/640
= 0,125
B. IMA = 36/4
= 9.0
C. Efficiency = AMA / IMA
= 0,125 / 9.0
= 89%
6. A certain hydraulic jack in a gas station lifs a 900kg car a distance pf
0,25cm when a force of 150N pushes a piston through a distance of
20cm, find the IMA , AMA and efficiency
A. IMA = 20/ 0,25
= 80
B. AMA = 900 / 150
=6
C. Efficiency = AMA / IMA
= 6 / 80
= 74%

7. The screw of certain press has a pitch of 0,20cm , the diameter of the
wheel to which a tangential turning force F applied is 55cm, if the
efficiency is 40% how large must F be to prodice a force of 12kN in
the press ??
Ans = 2vr = 2v(0,002m)
IMA = distance ratio = 2v(0,002) / 0,55
= 0,022
AMA = efficiency x IMA
= (40) (0,022)
=0,88
F = load lifted / AMA
= (12) (9,81) / 0,88
= 133N

8. The diameter of the two upper pullyes of a chain hoist are 18cm and
16cm if the efficiency of the hoist is 45% , what force is required to
lift a 400kg crete
Ans =
IMA = 18/16
= 1,1
Force = 0,48 kn
