1. Why do we study Philippine Literature?

 We study Philippine literature so that we can better
appreciate our literary heritage as Filipinos. By studying it,
we will be able to understand where we came from and we
can appreciate our culture as Filipinos. Through a study of
our literature, we can trace the rich heritage of ideas
handed down to us from our forefathers. Then we can
understand ourselves better and take pride in being a
Filipino.
2. Enumerate 5 functions of literaure site an example.
 Knowledge sharing This is the most basic and
important function of literature. We can learn many
new things about the world with its help; we can fill
ourselves with knowledge and become smarter.
 Upbringing Literature affects the feelings and
outlook of a person. Why do we read fairy tales in
childhood? Well, mostly because they clearly
distinguish between good and evil, which helps
children to understand what is good and what is bad
from an early age.
 Entertainment Even though we live in the digital age
with all forms of entertainment at our fingertips, a
lot of people still enjoy reading books to entertain
themselves. After all, books can take you anywhere
without you even leaving your couch, and they can
provide you with hours of fun.
 Shaping the aesthetic taste Literature helps us to
form our own vision of beauty. It pleasantly
influences us, changing our behaviour in society and
attitude towards people in general. It helps us to
notice everything beautiful around us.
 Self-development Literature helps us to develop
ourselves. Thanks to books, articles, magazines, we
have the opportunity to fill ourselves with new
knowledge, cultivate good qualities and strive for
something more.
 Pleasure We get pleasure every time from reading
good verses or beautiful work, or a book with a great
plot, or other interesting facts and scientific works.
People spend a lot of time looking for something that
really brings them pleasure, and literature is
something that does that.
 Shaping speech The more a person reads, the more
words they learn, as well as different designs and
options for constructing sentences. People can
enrich their vocabulary thanks to literature.

3. Explain: “Literature adds to reality.it does not simply describe

it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires
and provides, and in this respect, it irrigaes he dessert tha our
lives have already become.
 To me, this means that books add meaning to life, and they
can encourage new ideas and even change the course of
history. Books aren't just describing real life; they're
molding and shaping it. Our lives have become dry and
boring, but books bring new life and excitement.
I think what has been tried to explain here is that
literature adds to reality by changing our (the audience's)
perspective. A good book will challenge the way that you
think, which in turn will alter your perception of reality.
In other words, two people can look at the same
situation and each may get something totally different out
of it. Also, a single person looking at the same situation
before and after reading a book, may view it completely
differently as well.
In our lives we have certain "competencies," or things
that must be done, from work or school to going to the
grocery store. Literature can enrich these sometimes
mundane experiences by altering our perspective and what
once may have looked like a desert may now look like a
well-irrigated field or garden.

4. What is literary criticism and its functions?

 Literary criticism is making your judgement to the aesthetic
quality or correctness of a literary work. It means the
reasoned consideration of literary works and issues. It
applies, as a term, to any argumentation about literature,
whether or not specific works are analyzed. Its function or
purpose may be to make value judgements on a work, to
explain his or her interpretation of the work, or to provide
other readers with relevant historical or biographical
information. The critic's general purpose, in most cases, is
to enrich the reader's understanding of the literary work.
