Exercise 2: Write five team sports and five individual sports.

TEAM SPORTS INDIVIDUAL SPORTS

basketball hiking

Verbs for Sports

When we talk about games in the simple present tense, we usually use “play” plus the name of the
game.
I play golf.
You play baseball.
She plays basketball.
They play football.
We play hockey.
You play tennis.
They play football.

All of these sentences mean that the speaker does the sport on a regular basis.
For the negative, we add do not or does not:
I don’t play tennis.
You don’t play games.
She doesn’t play hockey.
They don’t play football.

We use the present continuous to talk about what we are doing now. Remember it is a form of the
verb be (is/are) + the present participle of the verb.
The students are playing football.
This means the students are playing the game now.

When a person can do a sport alone, we call that an individual

sport. Let’s look at the names for some individual sports.
hiking
ice skating
sailing
scuba diving
skiing
swimming

205
LESSON 19
We don’t say that we are playing these sports. To talk about individual sports, we often use the
verb “go” plus the –ing form of the name of the sport.
For example,
I go ice skating every winter.
You go sailing in the summer.
He goes scuba diving on weekends.
We go swimming at the beach.
You usually go skiing in Switzerland.
They sometimes go hiking in the country.

Prepositions of place or location are used after go + sport name + ing.

This is important to remember. Do NOT use prepositions of direction.
We go swimming at the beach.
NOT -- to the beach.
You usually go skiing in Switzerland.
NOT -- to Switzerland.
They sometimes go hiking in the country.
NOT -- to the country.

The names of individual sports are based on action verbs. We can also use the present simple verb
to talk about these sports.
I ice skate every winter.
You sail on the lake.
We bowl every Friday night.
I scuba dive once a month.
I never swim after I eat lunch.
She skis in Germany.
They hike in the mountains.

For a few individual sports, we use the verb “do” plus the name of the sport.
For example:
I do karate.
She does gymnastics.

The negative looks like this.

He doesn’t do gymnastics
They don’t do karate.

Is Jackie Chan ______________ gymnastics in the film?

My cousin____________ ___________________ (play football) in the Olympics this year.
My mother _______ ___________________ golf today.

LESSON 19
Ability: Can and Be able to
Let’s talk about ability to do things. We use the verb can to say someone has the physical or men-
tal ability to do something.
The woman is strong. She can lift heavy things.
Mustafa can play baseball. He knows the rules.

The negative, cannot or can’t means people don’t have the ability to do something.
The old woman is weak. She can’t lift heavy things.
Mustafa can’t play baseball. He doesn’t know the rules.

The verb can always stays the same. There is no s in the third person singular (he, she, it).
I can throw a ball.
You can swim.
She can catch a ball. Not – She cans catch.
We can run.
You can do gymnastics.
They can swim.

We also say be able to to talk about ability. Be able to often means the same as can.
We always use a form of be with able to.
I’m able to play basketball.
You’re able to play basketball.
He’s able to play basketball.
We’re able to win the game.
You’re able to win the game.
They’re able to win the game.
