Tutorial Week 1

The document summarizes a report on a school trip to Auckland, New Zealand. It discusses three key parts of the trip: host families, cultural activities, and language. For host families, it notes that students found the hospitality exceeded expectations but some families lived far from school. It recommends selecting closer host families. Cultural activities were successful due to guides, but New Zealand students missed out. It recommends including them in future trips. While most students practiced English, some were reluctant to speak with partners. It recommends travel journals to benefit language development. Overall, the trip provided cultural and educational benefits, and future opportunities to use English are recommended.

Week 1: Introduction (Types of Report-Informational Report)

Reading for information

B1 Can read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to his/her field and
interests with a satisfactory level of comprehension.

Exercise 1:
Read the report and do the exercise to improve your writing skills.
This report describes Year 2’s recent trip to Auckland and its aim is to assess the success of
the trip in order to recommend it to future Year 2 students of English.
Host families
All students agreed that the hospitality of the host families exceeded their expectations. Not
only did they make our students feel welcome in their homes, but they went out of their way
to ensure that the Malaysian exchange students experience New Zealand’s way of life,
including the culture, language and cuisine. Many students commented that they showed
exceptional kindness and generosity. However, some host-family homes were located great
distances from the school and, as a result, they had to leave extremely early in the morning
to guarantee they got to college bon time. I propose that on future exchanges host families
are selected within a 5-mile radius of the college.

Cultural activities
The Australian college staff ensured that our students got the most out of each visit by
contracting tour guides who were entertaining and spoke English at a comprehensible level
for our students. Consequently, the cultural activities were a resounding success. Not only
were our students shown most of the city main sights, they also had the opportunity to visit
stunning nearby towns of historical interest such as Queenstown and Fielding. Unfortunately
the New Zealand exchange students had to go to college while their Malaysian counterparts
were sightseeing. This can be improved by including them in the next day trip as thee
Malaysian students would have welcomed the chance to spend more time with the host
students.

Language
The majority of our students made the most of the opportunity to practise their English with
their host family and exchange partner. In addition, many students made a real effort to
converse with the tour guides during the day trips. However, some students still reluctant to
initiate meaningful conversations with their exchange partners. On future exchanges, I would
recommend students complete a travel journal of their visit, as this would benefit their
language development and provide a reminder of the trip.
Conclusion
On the whole, both Malaysian and New Zealand students found the experience a positive
one from a cultural and educational point of view. Provided that opportunities to use English
are extended in the future trips, I have no hesitation in recommending this language
exchange for students taking English at our college.

Field Trip Report to MC Recycling Centre

The recent trip to MC Recycling Centre was a very useful _________________ (1)
as it helped our class members with their course work. The main aim of the visit was
to find out about the _________________ (2) put in place to recycle waste in a large
municipality.

The presentation at the beginning by the centre ______________ (3) and the video
afterwards assisted us get a better understanding of how ________________ (4) are
administered at the centre. It was interesting to find out that the centre operates 24
hours a day all year round. However, it was surprising to learn that the centre only
collects 40% of ____________________ (5) as a lot of it is used as landfill.

The highlight of the trip was when we visited the ____________________ (6) room.
There was a vital safety __________________ (7) and we were told to put on a
bright orange jacket and wear a safety helmet at all times. It took a while, but
everyone understood the importance of remaining __________________ (8).
.

Overall the trip was very well organised and I have a better understanding of how
different materials are sorted. The manager was very _______________ (9)
and I wish we had had more time to ask him questions. I would suggest that the
video is shown at _____________ (10) , which would give more time at the centre
next year.
