Multimedia refers to applications that combine various digital media types including text, graphics, animation, audio, video and virtual reality. Graphics can be images, charts or photos and common formats are GIF, JPG and PNG. Animation creates the appearance of motion by displaying a series of images in sequence. Audio includes music, speech and other sounds which are commonly used for editing and sequencing in multimedia. Special software and file formats are needed to play, stream and distribute different media types.

Multimedia
-refers to any application that combines text with graphics, animation, audio, video and/or virtual
reality.
1. Graphics or Graphical Image
 is a digital representation of non-text information such as a drawing, chart, or photo.
2 Common Graphics Format:
a) GIF (Graphic Interchange Format)
 -use compression techniques to reduce file size and only contain 256 colors
suitable for images like company logos
b) JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
 is a format that compresses graphics to reduce their file size while balancing its
image quality.
c) Other: PNG (Portable Network Graphic)
 a file type that can contain more than 256 colors for complex images
 Thumbnail
 Small version of a larger image

2. Animation
 is the appearance of motion created by displaying a series of still images in sequence

3. Audio
 audio includes music, speech, or any other sound.
 2 Main Usage:
a) Audio Editing- A multimedia piece that uses audio needs some way to play back
that audio for the viewer.
b) Sequencing- Sequencing is like composing music, on the computer.
 Player- special software to listen to an audio
 Streaming- a process of transferring data in a continuous and even flows
 Podcast- a recorded audio that is usually an MP3 file type
