MEETING III
PAST TENSE

SIMPLE PAST
It is used to express an action which began in the past and has no connection with the present
situation.
e.g. I studied History yesterday.
Erick went to Paris last week.
Adverb of time: yesterday, ……ago, last………, this morning, just now, once upon a time, etc.

The forms:
( + ) Subject + Verb 2
e.g. The man cleaned the room just now.
The train left the station 5 minutes ago.
( - ) Subject + did not ( didn’t ) + Verb 1
e.g. He didn’t clean the room just now
It didn’t leave the station 5 minutes ago
( ? ) Did + Subject + Verb 1
e.g. Did he clean the room just now?
Did it leave the station 5 minutes ago?
Note: When the verb is “to be”, we use : - was for “he/she/it/I”
- were for “you/we/they

Fill in with the correct answers!

Fill in the gap!
When I entered (enter) the University of British Columbia, It was (be) the first time that I had
(have) so much freedom. At first, I didn’t study (not/study) very hard. Most nights, I chatted
(chat) with my friends and went (go) to the movies. As a result, I got (get) pretty low grades. My
parents were not (not/be) very happy. Fortunately, I met (meet) a senior who gave (give) me
some really good advice about how to study hard and take some time to have fun. In my second
year, I changed (change) my study habits completely. I always made (make) sure that I
completed (complete) my homework and that I understood (understand) what the professor
taught (teach) in class. In addition, I met (meet) a really nice woman who helped (help) me
develop and focus on goals for the future. I still took (take) time to meet friends and went out
with my girlfriend; however, I was (be) a much better student, and my parents were (be) much
happier.

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE


The Past Continuous tense shows an action that was going on in the past and then something
suddenly happened. This tense is often used with words like ‘while’, ‘when’, and ‘as’.

Was/were + Verb-ing

Example:
 “What did he say?” “I don’t know. I wasn’t listening.”
 It was raining, so we didn’t go out.
 In 1985 we were living in Canada.
 What were you doing at 3 o’clock yesterday?
 Today she’s wearing a skirt, but yesterday she was wearing trousers.
 They were watching television when I came home last night.

Put the verbs in brackets into the Simple Past or the Past Continuous tense.
1. As I (go) went to school yesterday, I (see) saw a lorry crashed into that shop.
2. He (hurt) was hurting his ankle while he (play) played football.
3. I (wash) washed my hands when the telephone (ring) was ringing .
4. When we (reach) reached his house last evening, he and his wife (laugh) was laughing
loudly.
5. Just as he (come) came out of the shop, he (meet) was meeting his old neighbour.
6. As my sister (run) run down the steps, she (trip) was tripping over a brick and (fall) was
falling flat on her face.
7. At 6 o’clock yesterday I (wait) waited for you at the cinema. I (wait) was waiting until it
was 7, then I (go) was going in to see the film alone.
8. They (watch) watched television when the fire (break) was breaking out.
9. She (sit) sat on the chair when she suddenly (scream) was screaming and (jump) was
jumping up.
10. He (lie) lay down and (read) read a book while I (do) was doing my sum.
ADDITIONAL EXERCISE
Make a conversation using Past Simple Tense and Past Continuous Tense
1. Using Simple Past Tense
Lydia : Hi! Tesa
Tesa : Hi lid
Lydia : I hear that you loose your wallet yesterday, is it true?
Tesa : Yes Lid, I am so sad..
Lydia : How it happend?
Tesa : I went home and I drove a bus, in that time, I sat near a man, I didn’t know who
was he. He read a newspaper.
Lydia : oh, um.. and then?
Tesa : but, I didn’t know he stole my wallet, I realized it when I would to pay that bus
Lydia : and then what do you do?
Tesa :  I borrowed money to the someone next to me and he was so kind....
Lydia : I am sorry to hear that.....
Tesa : Thnak lid, I hope it will never happend to you..
Lydia : thanks tesa

2. Using Past Continous Tense

Lydya : hello Tesa,,,


Tesa : hello lidya.....
Lydya : Who were you asking last night? Um, I think, it’s about….actress?
Tesa : Oh, it was Mrs. Risa saraswati. Just for your information, her assistant were
finishing 50% of the performance while I chatted with her.
Lydya :  Wow… That was, like, fast. They were not preparing any prepare when they arrived for
the first time, right?
Tesa : Mrs. Risa Saraswati hires three more assistant groups. They aided the first....
