Arch Dam Examples

The document provides examples of designing constant radius arch dams. The first example is for a dam 50 meters high with a base width of 50 meters and top width of 80 meters. Design calculations are shown to determine the intrados and extrados radii at different depths based on the given parameters. The second example designs a 100 meter high constant angle arch dam for a base width of 40 meters and top width of 240 meters using thin cylinder theory. Calculations again show how to determine the intrados radius at different depths.

Examples:

1. Design a constant radius arch dam for a valley 50 wide at the base and 80 wide at
the height of 50 from the base. Take the height of the dam as 50 , Allowable stress in
concrete 5 , and unit weight of water 10000 / and assume 1.5 thickness at the
top and central angle 140 .
Solution:

The intrados radius at the top is given by:

2∗ ∗ sin = ℎ
2

=
2 ∗ sin 2
80
= = 42.567 .
140
2 ∗ sin 2
The extrados radius at the top is given by:

= + = 42.5 + 1.5 =
Since the arch dam is constant radius will be the same throughout the depth
