IMEI Unlock (Factory Unlock)

Each iPhone comes with a unique identifier called IMEI (International Mobile Station Equipment Identity)
number. On an iPhone, you can find this number on:

In the USA, the IMEI is known as MEID (Mobile Equipment Identifier) or ESN (Electronic Serial Number)
for iPhones that utilize Verizon and Sprint CDMA network. Verizon and Sprint iPhones usually have 15-digit
number that start with 99xxxx

IMEI unlock is the best unlocking option available for iPhones.

This unlocking method is not new as other brands of mobile phones can be unlocked using IMEI number.
The process is simple, you send your IMEI to the unlock operator e.g. us, we send the request to mobile
service provider or manufacturer for the unlock code, and they send the unlock code to you.

However, it is slightly different with iPhones as unlocking is done via iTunes. When you connect your iPhone
to the computer, iTunes will read the IMEI and send it to Apple‟s activation server. The server then checks
the NCK database that stores information on every iPhone that was ever produced to determine if your
iPhone is eligible for unlocking. If your iPhone has been “flagged” as “OK to unlock”, iTunes will receive the
status and unlocks your iPhone automatically.

Clean, Barred, Blocked and Blacklisted IMEI

The IMEI number is often used by a GSM network to identify valid devices and therefore can be used for
stopping a stolen phone from accessing that network. For example, if an iPhone is stolen, the owner can call
his or her network provider and instruct them to “blacklist” the phone using its IMEI number. The iPhone‟s
IMEI may be blacklisted on both network provider and Apple‟s database.

An IMEI can also be barred, blocked or blacklisted if the iPhone owner does not settle his or her bills,
reported missing or by insurance claims.

Many Western countries have implemented blacklisting of IMEIs. Some of the symptoms of blacklisted
IMEI is no network signal, carrier name is not showing and unable to make and receive calls or send text
messages.

Is it Possible to Change an iPhone’s IMEI?

To date, there is no known software method to change the iPhone‟s IMEI. However, a few years ago, there
was a software called ZiPhone that allows you to change an iPhone‟s IMEI. This software is now obsolete.

In many countries, it is outright illegal to change the IMEI. Hacker @MuscleNerd (His Twitter account)
from iPhone Dev Team most likely found a method on how to do this, but probably due to strict laws he is
probably not going to release it to public.

The iPhone‟s IMEI are stored inside the NOR and CPU chips. By replacing both of these chips, a different
IMEI can be implanted into an iPhone. This type of work requires advanced soldering skills and specialized
tools such as a heat gun and an IR work station.
