notebook in answering the activities.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not
alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
TABLE OF CONTENTS
This module was created with you in mind during this time of the
pandemic or when face to face learning might be impossible. You will be
exploring on selecting measuring instruments used in metal craft designing.

What I Know
Activity 1:
Column A Column B
1. Arc A. A tool that can be rolled up and down.
2. Width B. It is a one-foot long measuring tool.
3. Push-pull rule C. It is the horizontal distance from side to side.
4. Divider D. A tool used to lay out arcs and circles.
5. Length E. Used to determine the dimension of an object.
6. Measuring tool F. It is a measure of vertical distance.
7. Try square G. It is also called a curved line.
8. Protractor H. A tool which is divided into 180 equal parts.
9. Height I. It describes how long an object.
10. Ruler J. It is a skill that requires measuring ability.
K. A tool used to measure right angles.

Do you like to be a fabricator and an entrepreneur? Do you appreciate
metal craft design? Do you know how much is the value of a metal craft
design? Making exact measurements will give you exact amount to be spent
on the materials needed for the design.
What’s In
Let us recall what you have remembered from the previous lesson by
answering this activity.
Activity 2
Directions: Give one example of the following classification of tools and its
use.
a. measuring tools
b. holding tools
c. cutting tools
d. driving tools
The different tools are very useful in Shielded Metal Arc Welding. Each
of them performs basic operations. Furthermore, the measuring tools carry
out numbers that specifically tells the exact length, width and thickness of the
metal to be used.
3
What’s New
The flower stand below measures the maximum height of 5 feet and
the total width of 4 feet.
What measuring tool are you going to use to measure its exact height
and width of the flower stand? Can you use more than one measuring tools?
If so, what are those?

A. Ruler
Steps:
1. Place the end of the ruler to the very first line and mark it
zero. This is lined up with the end of your object.
2. Look at the opposite end of the object you're measuring and
find the last number on your ruler that is alongside the object.
3. Then, get the measurement in either inch, centimeter or
millimeter.
7
B. Pull-push rule
Steps:
1. Place the tape measure on the object you are measuring.
2. Put the tape measure hook at the edge of the object.
3. Start measuring. You can get the units of either millimeter,
centimeter, foot, or meter.
C. Try square
Steps:
1. Place try square blade across the material you want to test or
mark.
2. The thicker part of the handle should extend over the edge of the
object to let the blade lie flat across the surface.
3. Hold the handle against the edge of the material.
4. The blade can now positioned at a 90 degrees angle to the edge.
You now get the measurement.
8
D. Divider

Steps:
1. Loosen the screw
2. Spread the legs.
3. Place one leg on radius and the other leg on the circumference.
4. Then, tighten the screw again. Make an arc or circle.
E. Protractor
Source:https://etc.usf.edu/clipart/42000/42019/pro_100_42019.htm
Steps:
1. Place the vertex or point of an angle at the origin.
2. Draw a line from a vertex.
3. Position the base line along one of the arms of the angle.
4. Get its measurement.

What’s more?
To test your understanding about the measuring tools and its usage,
you will be tasked to do the activity.
Activity 3
Directions: Do the following and choose inside the box the appropriate
measuring tools to be used. Write your answer in your SMAW
activity notebook.
10
What I Have Learned
Activity 4
Directions: Read the paragraph below and supply the missing words to
complete the statements from the word pool. Write your answer
in your SMAW activity notebook.
Measuring devices are tools used to measure the lengths and curves
of any objects in metal craft design. The two types of measurement system
are the 1._______________ and 2._______________systems. The
measuring tools such as 3._______________,4._______________, and
5.________________ are used to measure the length, the width and the
height of metal while the measuring tools such as 6._______________and
7.______________, are used to measure the angle and arc of an object.
