DETERMINATION OF TOTAL SURFACE MOISTURE CONTENT OF AGGREGATES
1. Objective(s):
The activity aims to determine the percentages of total moisture and surface moisture content in
a sample of aggregate.
2. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
The students shall be able to:
know how to determine the total surface moisture content of aggregate.
expand their knowledge in the use of total surface moisture content of aggregate in
other experiments.
apply the techniques and skills in different methods in determining total surface moisture content
of aggregate to professional engineering practice.
3. Discussion:
The Moisture Content of an aggregate in concrete mixture is very important consideration.
Aggregate Particles have internal pores that absorb water. The Total moisture content of an aggregate
sample moisture. The total moisture content of an aggregate sample moisture.
Drying method is one of the methods used for determination of moisture content of aggregates.
Drying is carried out in an oven and the loss in weight before and after drying will give the moisture
content.
4. Resources:
Gravel
Sand
Oven
Weighing Scale
Container
5. Procedure:
1. Prepare a minimum of 2000 grams test sample of coarse aggregate (25mm maximum size)
and 500 grams of fine aggregate.
2. Weigh the sample, W1.
3. Dry the sample to constant weight in an oven at 110°C for approximately 3 hours and cool.
4. Weigh the dried sample, W2.
5. Calculate the moisture content.

7. CONCLUSION
Paulino – I that the gravel contained less moisture contend that sand or fine aggregate. Furthermore,
It is important to know the moisture content of aggregate because it can affect workability of concrete. The
absorbed water remains within the aggregate pores and does not affect the slump of concrete and it not
included when calculating the water to cement material ration. The surface moisture makes a portion of the
mixing water, affect slump and is included when calculating the water to cement material ratio. If the
moisture content of wet aggregate is not compensated for, the slump may be too high and water -cement
ratio will not conform the mixture requirement. Therefore, the aggregate moisture has not to be measured
and the amount of water adjusted accordingly.
Binuya - This was just an easy experiment because we just need to follow the instructions then all
we gonna do is compute for the moisture content. We are suggesting and recommending that in doing this
experiment ppe should be worn properly for the safety of everyone.
Bangloy - This experiment shows how important moisture content is, compressive strength of
concrete is dependent on the ratio of mass of water to cementitious material.
