Hello future educators!


Welcome to Literary Criticism Module 1. In here, we will start our journey in dealing with
the world of literature by analyzing and applying varied theories, methods and approaches
to its unlock meaning. The study of literature is indispensable because it exposes students
to meaningful contexts that are replete with descriptive language and interesting characters
(Van, T.T.M, 2009). Consequently, Literary Criticism is line with teaching literature to the
L2 learners for it develops learner’s English language skills by appealing to their
imagination, developing cultural awareness, and encouraging critical thinking about plots,
themes, and characters. In this first module we will gather information about Literary
Criticism and its purpose, overview of Literary Theories and definition of terms in
Literary Criticism.

At the end of this module you will be able to attain the


following goals:

 Use English in multi context as it applies to the teaching
of language and literature
 Familiarize oneself in the varied literary theories
 Distinguish the terminologies related to Literary Criticism

Where – or when – does a literary text begin?

This question raises a series of fundamental problems in literary criticism and theory.
Does a text begin as the author puts his or her first mark on a piece of paper or keys in the
first word on a computer? Does it begin with the first idea about a story or poem, or in the
childhood of the writer, for instance? Or does the text only begin as the reader picks up the
book? Does the text begin with its title, or with the first word of the so-called ‘body’ of the
text?

Origins of Literary Criticism:

Criticism:

Criticism When you hear “criticism,” you might automatically


think about pointing out weaknesses or failures . However,
criticism can be favorable as well as unfavorable.

Literary criticism:

Literary criticism Literary criticism helps interpret the


meaning of a short story, poem, or play. Literary criticism
is an attempt to understand and ultimately evaluate what
an author has created.
