Mouse
Connor Nichol
Rhetorical Situation
S. Pawel Kuczynsky, polish, creates political cartoons
P. To comment on the current attitude the press has when finding the stories and photos they
publish. Many of them would rather take a picture and report on something like murder rather
then helping.
A.This seems to be aimed toward the viewers of the press to promote the thought of whether or
not the press is correct in its actions.
C. Because many reporters and press photographers try to get the photo or scoop over the
consideration of the person's wellness or privacy this piece was created.
E. Seeing harsh pictures taken like the image of the african child and the culture brings up the
question of how far someone with that job and position is willing to go.
C. He chose to portray the mice taking a picture of another mouse to show the close
relationship between the two and the disconnect that is created from them taking the photo
rather than helping. By making it a cat and mouse it is a very light image that dampens the
effects of the dark situation being portrayed. The mice are shown in the press jackets to tie them
to actual reporters and photographers that are seen in the world and to create the context with
which the piece is happening. Making the cat darker and the mice a very light hue of white
creates contrast between the two, but also commenting on the relation of good and bad and the
blurred line between it.Adding the cameras and the jackets creates personification with in the
mice and allows people who are seeing it to relate more closely with the piece causing the link
between the mice and them
A.Seeing the lack of sympathy between the mice creates an emotion of shock and disgust
because seeing as how they are the same animal you would expect the mice to care about the
one who was killed.
T. With the dark pallet used in this piece it creates a serious tone but that is contrasted with the
use of animals which lightens the dark reality of the image. The pallet is all warm colors which
makes it more cohesive and tied in when looking from each point to the next creating a uniform
composition. The actual subject and political issue of the piece is serious and is shown when
relating it to humans.
Thesis
By creating interest with viewers through the use of animals, creating feelings of shock through
the portrayal of the mice, and creating a relationship between the viewers and the image
through personification, Pawel Kuczynsky, in his peace Mouse, changes the viewers perception
of the lengths the press with go, showing the dark side of those in the job.
Good Morning
Anika Bala
Rhetorical Situation
S- Pawel Kuczynsky, renowned
artist with over 100 awards
P- to portray a message about
phones, and their impact in our
lives. How we “put on our phones”
first thing in the morning
A- anyone living in this modern
time, affected by phones. Younger
generations more than others.
C- the context is that people get
on their phones first thing in the
morning
E- the artist most likely saw
himself or those around him
affected by this heavy use of
phones and technology so early.
Rhetorical Choices
C- the artist uses color and shading to draw attention to certain parts of the screen. For
example, the shoe phone slippers are more highlighted than the pillow.
A- this appeals to morality as we humans see this and understand that we have a phone
addiction. We know it is morally wrong, and not healthy to be using our devices like that.
T- the tone of this is realistic but uses comparison. I personally read it as somber.
Thesis:
Pawel Kuczynsky uses color and shading, symbolism, and allusion in his masterful painting
Good Morning in order to send the message to his audience that technology has become so
ingrained in our lives that we use our phones first thing in the morning, and that they have
become as commonplace as slippers, ultimately moving the audience to analyze and reflect on
their technological choices and what they ultimately want their priorities in the morning and in
life to consist of.
1. Kingdom of Destruction
Fisher
Rhetorical Situation:
S- Pawel Kuczynski
P- Demonstrating who nuclear wars really affect
A- Citizens who support leaders and owning weapons of
destruction
C- The world has been under mutually assured
destruction for almost a century. The world leaders are
the ones in charge of these weapons, and at any moment
we could all die
E- When Trump was in office there was the threat from
North Korea of them having Nuclear Warheads, and other
countries were getting them. In early 2020 with the execution of a Saudi general there was a
threat of World War Three that would lead to the end of the world.
C- The Nuke is attached to a chair but untouched. The chair and the nuke have color and detail
while the background remains plain and drab. A crown is drawn on the chair demonstrating who
the center of this problem is and the chair being untouched shows that the ones who start it
won’t end up being hurt. Buildings are still intact yet there is a lot of rubble.
A- The buildings being up shows that civilisation will be destroyed appealing to our pathos
making us feel worried and depressed about these events. The buildings connect the dots to us
of what will be destroyed.
T- The tone is doom and gloom. Seeing all the destruction in the picture and who is untouched
makes the viewer feel like there is nothing to be done and the destruction is the thing that will kill
us. We will end each other making the tone doom.
Thesis:
In the political cartoon Kingdom of Destruction, the world was subjected to the nuclear winter
that was feared during the cold war and with the recent events of the Saudi General being
assassinated, Pawel Kuczynski uses a plain background to communicate lack of care, an
untouched throne to incite aggression, and a warhead attached to the throne to bring
understanding to who will be at fault for this in order to push the idea that humans hold too
much power and the one thing that will end our race will be ourselves, ultimately moving a
disenfranchised citizen to fight for the dismantling of such weapons of destruction, and such
power from one person.
Blinkers
Rachel Rachel Johnson
Rhetorical Situation:
S- Pawel Kuczynski, polish satirical artist, won a lot of awards, art about global issues.
P- To show how technology is blinding the world and preventing them from seeing real life.
A- Anyone who uses technology. So pretty much everyone.
C- the context of this is that we live in the twenty-first century where technology is a big deal and
people often get distracted by it.
E- Maybe he noticed that the world is being blinded by technology.
C- one choice that the author made was to make the animal a donkey. I think that was on
purpose because donkey’s are known to be stupid. The shading and colors is also. using
iphones to replace the blinkers of donkey. The donkey is smiling. You can see the phones apps
and the screen is on but they are blurred. The phones are strapped onto its face.
A- ethos: well i think credibility is kind of ironic in this case because I wouldn’t say that donkey’s
are super credible but the fact that anyone or any animal can be affected by technology makes it
credible.
Logos: there wasn’t really any logos in this picture; it is mostly targeted at feelings.
Pathos: this picture could emotionally impact the audience because the donkey is smiling and
that’s almost a little bit disturbing. It appeals to the viewer because it is relatable in that most
everyone today has a phone and knows that people spend entirely too much time on them.
T- All of the colors are really muted and earthy. I think this expresses more sadness. The only
brighter colors are on the screen of the phone.
Thesis:
In the satirical picture, Blinkers, created by Pawel Kuczynski, he explores the idea that
humans are blinded by screens through pathos, color choice, and irony in order to reveal to the
audience that their screens are consistently blocking their view, convincing them to put down
their smartphones and look around at the actual world.
Gage:
Blacksmith
S: Pawel Kuczynski, famous Polish artist. Whose style focus’ on meaning and purpose rather
than artistic beauty.
P: The purpose is to perhaps comment on the hard work and usefulness of books and their
knowledge, while the sad face of the creator hints that perhaps this book may not get used.
A: Anyone really, particularly students or those who read or learn.
C: Created in information age when book reading is declining and things are being moved
electronically, where blacksmiths are a thing of the past.
E: The artist likely fealt that a statement he needed or wanted to make on books and their value.
C: Ethos: a blacksmith creates tons of things so he would know what he's doing in creating
another, also his work is found on a website that mentions the artist's accomplishments.
Pathos: uses blacksmithing something associated with great accomplishment hard work and the
glory of a forged tool
Logos: a blacksmith creates tools and a book is a different kind of toll so he combines the two to
better accomplish his purpose
A: there is and emotional appeal to the reader through the feelings associated with the hard
work of blacksmithing and the value associated with books
T: Uses darker colors and a sad expression on the blacksmith to add a sadness ot the picture
Thesis: Kuczynski has created amongst many other satirical works and art pieces, the
Blacksmith, where a book is being forged using a hammer and anvil as sword or horseshoe
would be created. It is a satirical artwork created to convey the artists feelings on the declining
value of books and their true worth. He through the style and objects in his artwork creates a
sense of sadness about the book and the decline of reading due to technology, and hints at the
value of books as a tool and gateway to knowledge. All of this is done with the intent to make
the reader contemplate the value of books reading and knowledge and to perhaps value the
learning they have gained more than they currently do

The Hunger for More
C - There are pieces of the plate that are bitten out and there is nothing on the left side of the
plate. This is to show that the person has no food and would go to the extremes of eating the
plate although this doesn’t mean literally. While on the right side of the plate, there is a nice
meal and it’s also being eaten by someone who is dressed nicely. There is a difference in
lighting of the picture as well. The right side has more light shining on it as well which brings
more attention and highlights that side. While the left side seems a lot more dull. The hands on
the right side are also holding on to the plate which could signify that they’re trying to grasp for
food and are desperate for food.
A - This uses more pathos because it has a more emotional appeal to it.
T - The tone of this piece of art would be that the author is trying to convey that there are
inequalities in the world, even with food distribution and it shows that while some people are
well off there are people who do face poverty in this world.
The political art satirist Pawel Kuczynsky creates many pieces of art that address social issues
in societies today. The artist uses lighting, hand placement, and bite marks on the plate to
portray how our societies today view the wealthy and the poor and the inequalities that exist
between the two. It also highlights how bad and desperate the situation can be for the poor.
Kuczynski's The Hunger For More focuses on, amongst other things, the stark
differences between differing social classes and the access they have to basic needs. The
shading in the art highlights, for example, more light on the right side rather than the left
demonstrates to the audience an obvious disparity between the person on the left, the
impoverished, and the person on the right, the wealthy. The person on the right, who is well
dressed and mannered, is eating food off the plate, and appears better off, financially. The other
has eaten a piece of the plate highlighting the depths of hunger and disparity they are likely
facing. The shadows on the person on the left create an image of despair and uncleanliness
that the person is dirty. On the side of the wealthy there are still shadows, but instead of being in
the shadows they are casting the shadows illustrating how often the wealthy or those on the top
cast shadows down on those at the bottom as they rise to a higher standing. The plate also isn’t
split perfectly down the middle in terms of lighting. The plate becomes darker only part of the
way to the end of the plate demonstrating that the wealthy control far more than their fair share.
The wealthy in this illustration appear to be flaunting their wealth and even though it is one on e
one the light of the rich controls more than the dark of the poor. The clothing and skin color of
the two people is also notable. The person on the left who appears to have a darker skin color is
the one living in famine and poverty further illustrating how throughout history those with a
darker skin color have been on the bottom. On the right, the person has a lighter skin tone and
is clearly shown to be better off financially appearing to illustrate the correlation between skin
tone and social class. In this political cartoon, Kuczynski uses lighting to highlight the many
inequalities that exist between the different social classes and shows that the poor struggle is
completely out of their control, and the wealthy will not voluntarily help others.
