Rule Breakers
a spelling activity
Jail for Rule Breakers
What do you do with words that don’t follow the
normal rules of spelling? That’s easy—you throw them
in jail! This fun activity will help your child remember
Rule Breakers in a memorable way.
Assembly Instructions
1. Print pages 3-8 (color version) or 9-14 (black-and-white version).
2. Cut two slits along the dotted lines and cut out the spaces between the
window bars.
3. Cut out the playing cards for the level you wish to play. (Level 2 students use
the Level 2 cards, Level 3 students can use the Level 2 or Level 3 cards, and so
on.) For best results, use only one level of cards per game.
How to Play
1. Choose a card and show it to your child.
2. Ask your child to circle the letter or letters that don’t say what we expect
them to say. (For example, in the word said, the letters ai say /ě/ instead of
/ā/.)
3. Encourage your child to color in the circle to highlight the problem.
4. Throw the Rule Breaker in jail! Just slide the Rule Breaker card through the
slits so the card peeks out from behind the window bars.
5. Have your child write the word on paper.
