Wan Daniel - VOLTAIC CELL (Exercises)

1. A voltaic cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy through a spontaneous redox reaction. 2. In the aluminum-iron cell, aluminum is the negative electrode and undergoes oxidation, becoming aluminum ions. Iron is the positive electrode and undergoes reduction. 3. In the copper-zinc cell, zinc undergoes oxidation at the negative electrode, becoming zinc ions, while copper undergoes reduction at the positive electrode, depositing as copper metal and making the copper sulfate solution lose its blue color.

Answer for Question No. 1

a)
Chemical energy is converted into electrical energy

b)
It is the Aluminium because in a voltaic cell the more electropositive metal
will be the negative electrode and Aluminium is more electropositive
compared to Iron

c)(i) Aluminium electrode becomes thinner

c)
(ii) Al = Al3+ +3e-

c)
(iii)
d)

e)(i) Allows the flow of ions through it so that the circuit is complete

e) Sulphuric acid
(ii)

f)
Because the distance of Aluminium and copper is further in the electrochemical
series the voltage produced will be higher than 0.8V

Allows the flow of ions through it so that the circuit is complete

e)(i) Cu2+ + 2e- = Cu

e)(ii) Zn = Zn2+ + 2e-

f)
The intensity of blue color in CuSO4 decreases because Copper(II) ions in the
CuSO4 solution gains electron and form the copper metal and is then deposited

g) Because the distance of Magnesium and copper is further in the electrochemical

series the voltage produced will be higher than 1.1V
