Abstract

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” – Michael Jordan,

Hall of Fame basketball superstar1

An effective leader is the one who can understand people’s drives and conscript their involvement in a way that

helps an individual’s personality, goals, and welfares to the group’s purpose (W. Prentice, 2014)2. In this article,

I have tried to capture three important people whom I know from different walks of life and who have not only

been inspirations to me but also society in general. I have chosen these individuals as they have not only

excelled in their careers but also helped people around them to grow and created a lasting impression on their

peers. Each individual that I have chosen for the interview has a specific style of leadership and I had learned a

great deal from them.

Dr. Dilip V. Sardesai

Relationship: My father

Leadership quality: Always curious with a growth mindset, a teacher, and a social activist

Profession: He is now retired as Dean of a degree college and now involved in social welfare activities

for teachers

Excerpts of the interview: Dr. Sardesai strongly believes in “Karma” and as per him it is very

important to give back to society as people around you have a great contribution to your success even if you

do not recognize the same. He believes that to form a strong foundation for a harmonious society each

individual is responsible and must play his/her part in it.

He feels that he still has very little awareness of the latest technologies and social media platforms. As per

him if he knew all these tools 10 years back, he could have established multiple social awareness platforms

where people could contribute towards society.

He believes there is no age for learning new things in life and hence trying to understand the latest social

media platforms to spread awareness about the teachers’ apathy and hardships they have to face in India. His

tenure as president of the teachers’ association in Uttar Pradesh (India) made him realized the ground
conditions and how much consciousness can be generated through social media about the same. He is

determined to make them better for education professionals around him.

He wishes to learn meditation as he believes that would help him stay focused and healthy at this age. He

dedicates his success and thought process to his father, his family, and friends.

My learnings: I have learned from my father that to be a good leader you need to be always curious,

you should have a love for learning new things, and be humble.

Mr. Shivprasad Shukla

Relationship: My client for a software implementation project

Leadership quality: Influencer and conflict resolver

Profession: He is working as AGM in organization M/s. IVRCL LTD wherein he is leading a team in

the area of Real Estate Management of properties situated within the state of Maharashtra, Goa, and

Chhatisgarh (India).

Excerpts of the interview: A true believer in all-mighty and spiritually dedicated to a meditation guru

(Sri Sri Ravishankarji), Shivprasad is one of the most imperturbable clients I have ever worked with. He is a

true conflict resolver and has a remarkable quality to steer the team’s ship from the deepest and most

troubled waters. He is also a great listener and always open to honest feedback.

He wished that 10 years ago he had the in-depth knowledge of Pranayama and Meditation, which have made

it possible for him to remain calm and handle the tough situation with a better mindset and without any fear.

The sudden change in governing laws and change in sections of the act had worsened the enactment of

executed agreements, greed to snatch unlawful gains by the concerned parties, blow hot discussions, etc.

have taught him to focus on personal mental strengths. As per his interview, it is a continuous process to

learn that how to remain central to his core and put his 100% in his efforts or responsibilities, he shoulders,

without anxiety and fear in mind.

Shivprasad dedicates his happiness in life to his grandmother, parents, family, partner, colleagues, and

friends/critics/who have helped him to become what he is today and above all his beloved Gurudev Sri Sri

Ravishankarji.

My learnings: Shivprasad taught me how to keep your nerves calm and trust your abilities while

leading a team. There are always two sides to coins and hence for a leader, it is very essential to have the

good listing capability to understand the exact problem.

Conclusion

“Outstanding leaders go out of the way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in

themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.” – Sam Walton, founder of Walmart3

I’m very grateful to my professor who provided me this opportunity to interact with the three amazing

personalities whom I look up to. During this exercise, I learned what qualities a true leader should possess.

You need to be always on a learning path, aware of your strengths, lead from the front with an example, open

to feedback, and be humble in your approach. The ability to absorb such conduct in your life would surely

help you in your quest for success and make a better leader out of you.
