A Sunny Morning

“A Sunny Morning” is a play written by Serafin and Joaquin Alvera Quintero, Spain. The
whole story is majority played by the main characters namely, the lady (Dona Laura) and the
man (Don Gonzalo). In the past, Dona Laura was Don Gonzalo’s first love. In others hand, there
are two others namely Juanito who is Gonzalo’s servant and Laura’s maid, Petra. In the story, the
contrast is clearly appears between Gonzalo and Laura especially their characters. Laura is a lady
who loves nature and likes to be surrounded by birds. While Gonzalo, is an impatient man and
always complain whatever around him. If we read or watch the play, the conversation between
both of them are very simple and informal, but it builds the reader or the audience mood.

Basically this play talks about a tragic love story in the past of Dona Laura and Don
Gonzalo who met in the seventy. One day, they met accidentally and they spend the whole times
to tell each other about their tragic love. Therefore, the flashbacks are appears, because they need
to remind as well their past. The story takes place on the bench in the park in Madrid in the
autumn season. Actually, the park is the only one place where the play occurs. As we watch or
read the story, Laura and Gonzalo spend their whole conversation on the bench in that park. In
my point of view, the setting is really important to story and there is a strong relationship
between them. As we know, Laura loves nature and animal especially birds. She really loves it.
Therefore, the play happens in the park that reflects Laura’s character.

To be clearer and easily to be understood, the story can be summarized like this. In a
sunny morning, Laura and Gonzalo met in the park in Madrid. Firstly, Laura was sitting on the
bench and happily feeding the birds around there. Several minutes later, Gonzalo, accompanied
by his servant, Juanito, came to the bench where Laura has sit. Gonzalo scared away the birds
innocently that Laura’s feeding. Certainly, Laura was a bit angry of Gonzalo’s action and
attracted him by words. Gonzalo just did not care toward what Laura said. Gonzalo accompanied
by Juanito, sit beside Laura on the same bench. They begun to talk each other. As they talks,
Juanto took something from his pocket, Gonzalo’s book and gave it to Gonzalo. Then, he
received the book while taking out a telescope and started reading it. Suddenly, he grabbed a
pinch of snuff and offers it to Laura. Gonzalo was looking to his book and read aloud some
poems “ Twenty years pass, he returns” Laura took the book from Gonzalo and continued read
the whole verse loudly, “Twenty years pass, He returns, And each other beholding the others,
exclaims – Can’t be that this is she? Heavens, is it she?

Laura stoped reading and Gonzalo distracted their conversation by telling his childhood
to Laura. The city where he was grown up and begins telling about his first love story. Laura was
carried away by Gonzalo’s story and she was provoked to do the same thing as Gonzalo did,
telling the childhood. Actually, that was the moments where they both realized that they were
talking about a person who they were facing right now. They realize that they were a couple of
love in the past. Mysteriously, they pretended to hide their real identity. Gonzalo denied by
explaining that the man he’s talking was his cousin. Likewise Laura told that the girl that
Gonzalo’s talking is Laura’s best friend. On other hand, the both became really curious to one
another and dug deeper and more about their past. The similarities between their story made
Laura and Gonzalo extremely sure that the person they’re facing now is thir love in the past. At
the end, Laura and Gonzalo separated. Indirectly, Laura’s big desire is that she hoped can meet
Gonzalo in the following day. Gonzalo was too. It can be seen from their last deepest curiosity
between both of them.

Conclusively, this play belongs to comedy love story in the past that have a chance to
meet again in the characters’ seventy. The dominant characters, Dona Laura and Don Gonzalo is
absolutely contrast. Laura loves nature and birds while Gonzalo always busy by complaining
anything surround him. The plot used is go straight ahead, although there are some flashbacks,
but there are no action in the past. The characters only tell their pats, does not act in the past. The
setting is also does not shift from one to another place. The only one setting used is in the park
especially on the bench. The story begins in a sunny morning, in autumn especially in the park.
Laura and Gonzalo meets when they were seventy. After long time, they realize that they were a
couple of love in the past, but they pretend to do not know each other and denies the truth. Each
stories of them more ensure that their feeling is true. At the end they separated although did not
telling the truth and the curiosities did not certainly answered.
