Cathodic Protection Part 2

This document discusses methods for cathodic protection (CP) inspection. It describes why CP inspection is important to check the ability of a CP system to prevent corrosion, detect any issues to adjust the system, and ensure structural integrity. The document outlines standards and regulations for CP inspection of offshore structures and pipelines. It then details the different phases in the life of an offshore structure and the measurements taken at each phase, including potential, electrical field gradient, anode current, and visual inspections. Finally, it explains various survey techniques for CP inspection, such as cell-to-cell, trailing wire, and field gradient measurements.

Phases cont.
 Period A - Polarisation of new structure/pipeline. (Months)
Normally very short but dependant on design criteria and anode output
characteristics.

 Period B - Protected Design Life. (e.g. 15 years )

Stabilised CP conditions but dependant on CP design, anode efficiency,
coating breakdown and environmental conditions.
e.g.. Design for approx 5 to 10 % coating failure.
CP level desired; -950 mV to -1050 mV.

 Period C - Depolarisation Period.

 Period D - Under Protection.

This is a critical period when protective levels drop below -800 mV
(or -900 mV for buried pipe). Danger of failure from corrosion at localised
postions.
