Try these:
Now consider this...Han, Lin, Andre and Clare are going to the softball game but now each of
them wants to buy a snack.
Try these
1. 3 + (72 -8) 2. 2 • [14 + 3 - 9 ÷ (4+5)]
Come up with a rule for evaluating expressions that include adding, subtracting,
multiplying, and dividing exponents and parentheses
Try these
1. 6 + (9-22) 2. 6 + (9-2)2
Lesson 12 Summary
When we solve expressions, we use one set of rules so that anyone solving a problem will
arrive at the correct answer.
Grouping symbols, like parentheses and brackets, tell us to evaluate what’s inside before
moving on. We do the most powerful operations first, exponents, then move on to
multiplication and division (from left to right) to the least powerful operations of addition
and subtraction (from left to right).
My Reflections
2. Andre is going to take 5 of his friends to the skating rink. It costs $6.00 per person to
get in. Two of Andre’s friends purchase a drink for $2.00. How much money did they
spend?

b. 62 - 18 ÷ 3 + 24 d. 16
- ( 5−1 )
5. The school store sells pencils for $0.40 each, hats for $12.50 each, and binders
for $3.50 each. Elena would like to buy 3 pencils, a hat, and 2 binders. She estimated
that the cost will be less than $20.
b. Estimate the number of pencils she could buy with $5. Explain or show your
reasoning.
