Note: In all questions, Reg. No. means the last three digits of your OWN registration number,
e.g. 162 for 17JZCIV0162.
1. Four steel springs supports a machine for which damping is negligible. The machine-spring system
has a natural frequency of vertical vibration as 200 cycles per minute. The vertical force generated
by the machine can be represented as p ( t ) =p 0 sinωt .The resulting steady-state vertical
displacement of the machine has an amplitude of u0 =0.2 in. when the machine is running at (Reg.
No. /10) revolutions per minute (rpm), 1.042 in. at (Reg. No.) rpm, and 0.0248 in. at (Reg. No. x 3)
rpm. Calculate the amplitude of vertical motion of the machine if the steel springs are replaced by
four rubber isolators which provide the same stiffness, but introduces damping equivalent to
ζ =25 % for the system. Calculate the percentage decrease/increase caused by the rubber isolators
in the amplitude in all three cases and comment on the effectiveness of the isolators [CLO 2, 25
Marks].
2. A one story RC building is idealized as a massless frame supporting a dead load of 10 kips at the
beam level. The frame is (Reg. No. /10) ft wide and (Reg. No. /15) ft high. Each column, clamped
at the base, has a (Reg. No. /20) in. square cross section. The Young’s modulus of concrete is 3 x
103 ksi, and the damping ratio of the building is estimated at 5%. If the building is to be designed
for the design spectrum of Figure 1 scaled to a peak ground acceleration of 0.5g, determine the
design values of lateral deformation and force for the two conditions: [CLO 3, 25 Marks].
(a) The cross section of the beam is much larger than that of the columns, so the beam may be
assumed as rigid in flexure.
(b) The beam cross section is much smaller than the columns, so the beam stiffness can be ignored.
Comment on the influence of beam stiffness on the design quantities.

3. The columns of the shear frame shown in Figure 2 has a square cross section of (Reg. No. /20)
in. and h = (Reg. No. /15) ft. The Young’s modulus of elasticity is 3000 ksi. Formulate the equations of
motion for the frame with lumped masses shown where m = (Reg. No. x 20) slugs. The beams are rigid
and neglect axial deformations in all elements. [CLO 3, 25 Marks].
