Objectives:
By the end of this unit, students are able to:
1. understand the concept of simple past and past continuous tense
2. distinguish the use of simple past and past continuous tense.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE
The simple past tense is used to talk about a completed action in a time before now. The
simple past is the basic form of past tense in English. The time of the action can be in the
recent past or the distant past and action duration is not important.
▪ Ranggith sailed to Africa in 1846
▪ My lovely uncle died last month
▪ They lived in Malaysia in 2010
You always use the simple past when you say when something happened, so it is
associated with certain past time expressions.
Here are some time expressions usually used in simple past

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE


It is used to talk about something that was happening when another past action was
completed. It is used with the past simple tense.
• I was walking down the street when I saw the 'Sale' sign.
It is used to talk about two actions in the past that happened at the same time and were
continuous.
• I was talking to my friend while I was washing the dishes.
FORM

Positive S + was/ were + V ing She was eating when I came

Negative S + was/ were + not + V ing She was not eating when I came

interrogative Was/were + S + V ing Was she eating when I came?
