Module 11 Study Guide - The Forces in Creation Part 1

The document provides a 10-day study guide for a physical science module on the four fundamental forces: gravitational, electromagnetic, weak, and strong force. Each day focuses on a different topic, such as the properties of each force, circular motion, gravity, comets and planets, and the history of the heliocentric model of the solar system. Students are assigned readings from their textbook and videos to watch, with related questions to answer for each day.

Module 11
The Forces in Creation – Part 1
Study Guide

DAY 1: The Four Fundamental Forces: Part 1

Watch: Fundamental Forces (minute 1:00 to 17:03)
 gravitational force

 electromagnetic force

 weak force

 strong force

Review: [you will be asked questions each day; ask for help if you need it]
 d = v·t
(displacement is the velocity times the time you travel that velocity)
o e.g. If I travel at 5 mi/hr south for 2 hours, d = 5 mi/hr north · 2 hr = 10 mi. north

 v = Δd/t
(velocity is the change in displacement divided by the time it takes to change the
displacement)
o e.g. If I drive from my home (0 miles away) north to Greeneville which is 30 miles
away and it takes me one hour, my velocity is (30 miles N – 0 miles N)/1 hr.
Thus, I am going an average velocity of 30 mi./hr N.

 a = Δv/t
= (vf-vi)/t
(acceleration is the change in velocity divided by the time it takes to change velocity)
o e.g. If I am going 20 mi/hr north and I speed up to 40 mi/hr north over the course
of 1 hr, my acceleration is (40mi/hr north – 20 mi/hr north)/1hr => 20mi/hr/hr
north = 20 mi/hr2 north

 F = ma
(The force (F) is the push/pull it takes to change the velocity of an object [i.e. accelerate
it] of a certain mass (m) a certain amount (a).)
o e.g. If I have a 5 kilogram bowling ball and I accelerate it to 10 meters per
second over the course of 2 seconds, what force have I exerted?
F = ma
m = 5 kg
a = Δv/t
t=2s
vi = 0 m/s
vf = 10 m/s

Señor Kotynski la fecha: _____________
a = (10 m/s - 0 m/s) / 2 s
= 10 m/s / 2 s
= 5 m/s2
F = 5kg · 5m/s2
= 25 kgm/s2

Answer the following question:

1) You walk from a loop around your neighborhood. It says that you have walked one mile.
What distance did you travel? What was your displacement?

DAY 2: The Four Fundamental Forces: Part 2

Read pp.253-259
 What is a fundamental force?

 Make sure you have defined the four forces for the previous day

 The force of gravity is inversely proportional to the square of the distances.

o Make sure you understand what this means or ask.

 Go over example 11.1 carefully (p.257).

 OYO 11.1 (ask dad if necessary)

 OYO 11.2 (ask dad if necessary)

2) You run the 1.6 km loop around your neighborhood in 10 minutes. What was your
average speed in m/s? Why would it be improper to talk about your velocity?

DAY 3: Force and Circular Motion

Read pp.260-265
 EXP 11.1 (write out the lab and hand in)

 centripetal force

 ‘centrifugal force’

 OYO 11.3

2
Physical Science nombre: _____________
Señor Kotynski la fecha: _____________
 OYO 11.4

 Using what you know about Newton’s laws of motion and the fact that gravity is a

centripetal force, explain why the moon does not fall into the earth. If you can’t go over

with dad.

3) You start from a standing stop and reach your top speed of 2.2 m/s in 10 seconds. What
is your acceleration?

DAY 4: Gravitational Force

Watch: Scale of the Solar System (up to minute 5:45)
Read pp.265-269
 inner planets

 outer planets

o (know the difference in composition and in position)

 Learn the order of the planets (see p.266, Fig. 11.6)

 perturbations

 meteoroids

 meteors

 meteorites

 OYO 11.5

 OYO 11.6

 OYO 11.7

4) You run for 1.6 km at an average of 2.2 m/s. How far have you run?

DAY 5: Comets and Pluto
Read pp.296-273
 Comets

o what kind of ice is a comet made of?

o how big are comets?

 period

 Oort Cloud

 Kuiper Belt

 Pluto

 planet (scientific definition)

 dwarf planet (scientific definition)

5) You accelerate from 1 m/s to 2.2 m/s in 2 seconds. Find your mass in kg and tell me how
much force you had to exert.

DAY 6: Gravity and Heliocentrism

Watch: Gravity Experiment (till about minute 8:00)
Read pp.274-278

 OYO 11.9

Read pp.278-280
 Be able to explain why scientists began to think the earth revolved around the sun rather
than the other way around. Talk to dad about it if you need to.
 On p.280 it talks about theories and laws. Let’s discuss the difference and why it may
not be that scientists were being stubborn in being geocentric.

DAY 7: Review
pp.283-384 #1-7

DAY 8: Review
pp.283-284 #8-12

DAY 9: Review
pp.283-284 #13-23
