A study of Angels

And their Purpose on Earth

2011

Angel Study

In the natural army, they have ranks of men according to their ability to perform. God had ranks in
Heaven for his angels who do a certain service at his orders and plans. Satan, who once was in Heaven,
was overcome by “pride” and was thrown down to this earth. So what he saw in Heaven, he made
“ranks” with angels and demonic forces that became into existing.(Remember he took 1/3 of the angels
from heaven with him).

Millions of angels are at Gods command and at our service. Angels were created to glorify Christ
(Col. 1:16, Psalms 148:2, 5) (Praise Ye him, all his angels; praise ye him, all his host; let them praise the
name of the Lord; for he commanded, and they were created.)

Faithful angels are referred to as holy and elect angles, (Mark 8:38, 1 Tim. 5:21) While the fallen angles
are known as the devil’s angels, (Matt. 25:41, Rev. 12:9)

Rev. 4:11 says (Thou are worthy, o Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for tho has created all
things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.) They are considered a company of beings, and
not a race.

The time of their Origin

(Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said… Where wast thou when I laid the
foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou has understanding when the morning stars sang together, and
all the sons of god shouted for joy. (Job. 38:7, 4, 7)

The nature of Angels

They do not posses flesh and bone in heaven. However if they come in the form of man, they can
change. They eat food, (Genesis 18:1-8, Gen. 19:1-3) and on one occasion as applying physical force,
(Acts 12:7).

They are invisible beings, (Rom.1:18-32, Col. 2:18, Rev 19:10, and 22-9)

They are Innumerable

(Job: 38:7, Psalms 148:1-3, Rev 9:1-2, Rev 12:3, 34, 7-9) (The Lord came from Sinai.. with ten thousand of
saints.—Duet. 33:2) The “Saints” here are doubtless Angels.

(Matthew 26:53) Jesus spoke of being able to call for twelve legions of angels (a legion of 6,000).
(2 Kings 6:17) The servant of Elisha saw the mountains full of chariots of fire around about Elisha and
these doubtless were angels.

(Psalms 68:17) The chariots of God are 20,000 even thousands of angels.

(Matthew 26:53) Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my father and he shall presently give me more
than twelve of angels?

(Heb. 12:22) But ye are come unto Mount Zion and unto the city of the living God the heavenly
Jerusalem and to innumerable company of angels.

(Rev. 5:11) And I beheld and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the number
of them was ten thousands times ten thousand and thousands of thousands.

What do they do?

(1 Corinthians 4:9) Says (For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last , as it were appointed to
death, for we are made a spectacle unto the world and to angels and to men.

There is a true story about a missionary who was forced to sleep outside one night and robbers were
planning to steal from him, but the robbers were frightened away by the presence of sixteen soldiers
with swords. The missionary laughed at the story, but later found that a group of sixteen people had
prayed especially for him on that particular night, God does have ministering angels.

The existence of angels

The word angel first occurs in Genesis 16:7 where the angel of the lord ministered to Hagar after Sarah
had mistreated her. The angels were created by God, but the time of that creation is not revealed.

(Colossians 1:6) Says (For by him were all things created that are in heaven and that are in the earth
visible and invisible).

Angels are spirit beings. (Hebrews 1:14 Are they angels not all ministering spirits) (Psalms 104:4 Who
maketh his angels spirits his ministers a flaming fire). As spirits angels are not bound by natural human
laws; angels can enter locked prisons. (Acts 12:7)
They open prison doors. (Acts 5:19) They can ascend in a flame. (Judges 18:19 & 20)

Angels are able to travel great distances very quickly (heaven to earth) which maybe many light-years
apart note: Daniel chapter 10 verse 13 An angel apologized for being 21 days late to Daniel.

Angels are wiser than men. (2 Samuel 14:20 My lord is wise according to the wisdom of an angel of God
to know all things that are in earth)

Angels are strong. (Psalms 103:20 Bless the lord ye his angels that exile in strength.)

One angel killed 185 thousand Assyrian soldiers in one night (2 Kings 19:35)
One angel slew 70,000 thousand Israelites following David’s sin (Samuel 24:16 &16)

(Matthew 28:2 &4) An angel broke the seal and rolled away the stone from the tomb.

One angel will one day bind the devil and imprison him for a thousand years.

There are various ranks and orders of angels. Michael is called an archangel in Jude chapter 9.

Angels are invisible; their bodies know nothing of death an decay.

The fall of angels

(Mark 8:38) Angels are described by our lord as being holy. (Sinless and pure) Angels were created
beings that are holy (Luke 9:25)

2 Peter 2:4 Speaks of the fall of Angels

The angels that sinned. It was the sin of sex with the women on earth (Genesis 6:1-4 They came in the
form of a man). In heaven they don’t marry, but on earth God gave them manly parts and they had a
free will. How they would act upon this earth as a result of their fall they are awaiting judgment. (Jude 6)

Why did God send angels down here in the first place? Their mission according to Jewish history was to
teach men the ways of God. Look at Revelation, God sends angels down to minister to people during the
tribulation time. (Rev. 18)

(Matthew 4:11) Angels came to minister to Jesus at the great temptation. (Matthew 18:10) Jesus said
speaking of the guardian angels “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones, for I say unto
you that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my father which is in heaven.”

So we see (Col. 2:18 and 2 Thess. 1:7) That Paul believed in angels also. They protect, they comfort, this
is found in (1 Kings 19:5 and Acts 27:24) They deliver (Acts 5:19 and Acts 12:7)

What do we know about angels?

They are to be judged like men, they are sent to answer prayers, they wait upon Christ. This is found in
(Matthew 24:31, Matthew 26:53) They execute the judgment of God, this is found in (Gen. 19:1, Jude
5:23, 2 Samuel 24:16, 1 Chron. 21:15)

Some of the angels have fallen into sin. (Job 4:18, 2 Peter 4:4, Jude 6, Rev. 12:9)

Their destiny is to spend eternity in the New Jerusalem along with the elect. (Heb. 12:22 &23,

Rev. 22:12)

Angel’s spectators
How would you live if you knew that you were being watched all the time? First Corinthians says that
angels are watching us. Christians live in a vast area with the conflict with forces of evil. They watched
how you serve the savior and live a Christian life.

(Matthew 11:22) Every idol word that men speak they shall give an account there of in the judgment
day, nothing will be hid. (Luke 12:12) God also records all of our thoughts and intent of our hearts.

Guardian angels

(Matthew 18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven
their angels do always behold the face of my father which is in heaven.)

(Heb. 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them that shall be heirs of
salvation?)

Angels are associated with horses and chariots. (2 Kings 2:11)

Gods warrior is Michael

The word “Michael” means “who is like God” Michael is mentioned by name in four separate occasions
in the bible. Michael is the “Administer of God for Judgment.” He helps a lesser ranked angel get
through to answer Daniel’s prayer. (Daniel 10:13-21)

(1 Thess. 4:16 Says for the lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the
archangel and with a trump of God and the dead in Christ shall rise first.)

He will stand up for Israel during the tribulation. (Daniel 12:1) He disputes with Satan concerning the
dead body of Moses. (Jude 9) He fights against Satan in the heavenlies. (Revelation 12:7)

Gabriel

The angel Gabriel means in Hebrew “God’s hero” and “the mighty one.” He appears four times in the
bible, he does seventeen things in the bible. (Note) In the Wilmington’s guide on page 777, lists the
things he has done. He explains the vision of the ram and goat battle to Daniel. (Daniel 8:16) He explains
the seventy weeks to Daniel (Daniel 9:21) He predicts the birth of John the Baptist to Zacharias (Luke
1:19) He predicts the birth of Jesus to Mary. (Luke 1:26) He assures Joseph concerning the purity of
Mary. (Matthew 1:20) He warns Joseph about the plot of Herod. (Matthew 2:13) He tells Joseph about
the death of Herod. (Matthew 2:19)

Cherubim Angel

The cherubim scriptures can be found in (Genesis 3:24, Exodus 25:18-20, Ezek. 1:4-28, Ezek. 10:1-22)
The cherub is a strange looking angel. Each angel has two pairs of wings, one pair spreads out from the
middle of the back, and the other pair is used to cover the body. These wings make a noise like waves
crashing upon the seashore. They have the legs of men, but their feet are cloven like calves feet, which
shine like burnished brass. Each had four faces. The face in front is as a man, this speaks of its wisdom
and intelligence. The face on the right is as a lion, its kingly authority. The face on the left is as an ox, its
strength. The face in the back is as an eagle, its swiftness. They have four human hands with one located
under each wing. They apparently travel in groups of four. The out stretched wing of each cherub
touches those of the remaining three companions, so that they form a square. When they move, they
move as a group without turning their bodies.

The duties of the Cherubim

They keep Adam from the tree of life after the fall, least he eat of it and live forever in his sin. (Genesis
3:24) Two golden cherubs were constructed at God’s command and placed at either end on top of the
arch lid in the tabernacle which was the holy of holies. This is found in (Exodus 25:18-20 and Hebrews
9:5) Notice Satan is a “copy cat” of what he saw in heaven, he put the ideas to work here on earth.
There is an interesting picture between the cherub as guarding the entrance to paradise and the winged
bulls and lions of Babylon and Assyria. Colossal fingers with human faces standing guard at the
entrances of temples and palaces let us know Satan had a part of this. The cherubim’s appeared to
Ezekiel in a vision in (Ezekiel 1:10) Ezekiel has them full of eyes and constantly glorifies God. They are
seen guarding the tree of life in the garden of Eden. (Genesis 3:24) “Note” Prior to Satan’s fall he was
known as Lucifer in heaven, he was the chief cherub angel found in heaven. This can be found in (Isaiah
14:12 and Ezekiel 28:14)

Seraphim Angels (Isaiah 6:1-7)

The Hebrew word of “seraphim” means “burning ones.” These beings are mentioned only once in the
bible. They have six wings, two are used to cover their face, two are used to cover their feet, and two
are used to fly with. They proclaim in a great chorus, the majesty of God crying “HOLY!HOLY! HOLY! Is
the lord of hosts! The whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:8) The awesome sound of their mighty
praises shakes the foundation of the heavenly temple. He is administered by one of the seraphim’s who
fly over the heavenly altar and with a pair of tongs, picked out a burning coal. He then touches Isaiah’s
lips, and tells him his sin is purged.

Living Creatures

These are found in (Rev. 4:6-9, Rev. 5:8, Rev. 6:1-7) These special heavenly beings are in some ways
similar to both the cherub and the seraphim, but seem to be in a separate class by themselves. Their
number appears to be limited to four. It has been suggested that they now hold those privileges and
responsibilities once assigned to Lucifer before he became the Devil. John sees them covered with eyes
both in front and behind, one has the face of a lion, one has the face of an ox, one has the face of a man,
one has the face of an eagle. Each creature has six wings. “Note” There are similarities here between the
cherub and the living creatures. The cherubs each have four faces while the living creatures have six.
(Rev. 4:8) Without stopping they cry HOLY! HOLY! HOLY!

Each of the four living creatures will announce of the first four great tribulation judgments of the seven
sealed books (Rev. 6:1,3,5,6) It is said that the four faces present two different meanings. One way is
that it stands for the four fold gospel of Christ. Matthew presents him as the lion of the tribe of Judah.
Mark presents him as the lowly ox. Luke presents him as the perfect man. John presents him as the
mighty gold like eagle. “Note” In the Clarence Larkin book, the tribes were divided up into four sections,
then twelve, ect. One section stood for the man, one section stood for the ox, one section stood for the
eagle, and one section stood for the lion.

Ruling Angels

(Ephesians 1:21, Ephesians 3:10, Col. 1:16, Col 2:10, 1 Peter 3:22) The organization features are
mentioned are principalities, powers, thrones, authorities, dominions, might.

Guardian Angels

(Matthew 18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven
their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
(Heb. 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of
salvation.)

Their names and titles

1. Ministers (Psalms 103:20,21; Psalms 104:4) This signifies their religious duties and spiritual services.

2. Host. (Gen. 32:1,2; Joshua 5:14; 1 Samuel 17:45; Psalms 89:8) This name speaks of their military

6. Sons of God (Gen. 6:2,4; Job 1:6; Job 2:1; Job 38) Sometimes angels are called sons of God while men
are called servants of God. In the New Testament this is reversed. Angels are servants and Christians are
the sons of God.

7. Holy Ones, Saints (Psalms 89, Daniel 8:13, Zech 14:5) This refers to their separation to the will of God.

8. Stars (Job 38, Psalms 148:2,3; Rev. 12:3,4) This may indicate both their number and their brightness.

Their work and ministry

They worship the person of God (1 Kings 22:19, Psalms 29:1-2, Isaiah 6:3, Rev. 4:8, Rev. 19:4)

They observe the people of God

(1 Kings 19:5) Elijah was depressed under a juniper tree.

They minister to the believer at the moment of death

(Luke 16:22, And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s
bosom.)

(Acts 27:14) Paul had an angel in the night.

Concerning the unsaved

1. They judged the Egyptians (Exodus 12:13, 23)

2. They judged the Sodomites (Gen. 19:13)

3. They judged the Assyrians (2 Kings 19:25)

4. They judged Herod (Acts 12:23)

5. They will judge the earth during the tribulation (Matt. 13:29-43, 2 Thess. 1:8, Rev. 7:1, Rev. 8:2, Rev.

Matt. 4:11, Matt. 28:2,6; Luke 22:43; Psalms 91:11; Acts 10:11; 2 Thess. 1:7-8; 1 Peter 3:22)

What are the seven names of the angels and what work do they do in (Rev. 8:2)

(Rev. 8:2, And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.)

There will be some deep revelations between the prayers of the saints an the ministry of the seven
archangels referred in this passage. For 6,000 years these angels have been ministering to the human
race and have much to do with their lives. These seven angels stand before God and are called the
angels of God’s presence, but Jesus tells us of certain angels that do always behold the face of our father
in heaven. According to the writings of the ancient Jews in the apocryphal books, here are their names
and official ministries.

1. Raphael: This is the angel that presides over the spirits of men.

2. Raguel: This is the angel that superintends various punishments dealt out to nations and to men.

3. Michael: This is the archangel that has special guardianship over Israel and the relations between
Israel and other nation as referred to in the book of Daniel.

4. Sarakiel: This is the angel that is over transgressions and various degrees of disobedience.

5. Uriel: This is the archangel that superintends all the wars and conflicts of the nations.

6. Gabriel: This is the archangel that has supervision over the church and over paradise and the spirits of
the righteous dead. He is also the messenger of God.

7. Ithuriel: This is the angel that presides over frauds, deceptions, and intrigue.

“Note” Of the seven archangels there is mentioned of “another angel” who is the great high priest, the
lord Jesus Christ himself and there are seven other passages that he is the high priest, the Son of God.

Satan’s Angels and Their Ranks

He is a person, and he has many names. He is Satan, Devil, Beelzebub, Belial, Adversary, Dragon,
Serpent. He is mentioned 174 times in the bible. He is a created being and at one time he protected the
throne of God. He was perfect in beauty and his garment was clothed with rare and precious gems, all
woven in gold. He dwelt in Eden the “Garden of God,” which was a heavenly garden on the holy mount
of God. (Ezek. 28:11-19)
He has a kingdom (Matt. 12:24) and I repeat, he has ranks of other angels (Eph. 6:12, For we wrestle not
against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.)

He abodes in the “heavenlies” and has access to God and he is the “accuser of the brethren.”

Lucifer and the angelic rebellion

Lucifer was also an archangel with Michael. His name meant “the son of the mourning” (Isaiah 14:12-11
and Ezekiel 28:12-17 “Says you have the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect beauty.”)

He was placed on the holy mountain of God. He took one third of the angels with him when he fell.

Lucifer said five “I wills” look at (Isaiah 14:12-16)

1. I will ascend into heaven

2. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God

3. I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation

4. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds

5. I will be like the most high

(Isaiah 14 verse 15 Says “yet though shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. Verse 16: They
that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, sane, is this the man that made the earth
to tremble, that did shake kingdoms?

In the book of (Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezek. 28:11-19) speaks of Satan’s rebellion. The characteristics of
some of the evil angels “note” this information came out of the Wilmington’s Guide.

The names of the few fallen angels

Remember Satan saw everything in heaven and he knew that names meant something. So he “copycats”
a lot of things he saw in heaven to use in his kingdom. They (Israel) sacrificed unto devils, not to God
(Deut. 32:17). The Hebrew word here translated “devils” is:

1. Shedim: (1 Cor. 10:20) They sacrificed their sons and daughters unto devils.

2. Seirim, Sair, Satyr: (Lev. 17:7) and they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils. (Isaiah 13:21
But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls
shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.) Satyr means “he-goat” which in Hebrew is thought to be
tied into demon creatures of some sort. The Hebrews were to sacrifice at the altar of the tabernacle and
not to sacrifice in the desert to “he-goats” Jeroboam one appointed worship for the Seirim. (2 Chron.
11:15)

3. Elilim: (Psalms 96:5 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.
4. Gad: (Isaiah 65:11 But ye are they that forsake the lord, that forgot my holy mountain, that prepare a
table for that troop.) The word “troop” here in Hebrew is the word “fortune,” (fortune telling, psychics,
palm readers today)

5. Qeter: (Psalms 91:5-6 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by
day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.)
The phrase “destruction that wasteth at noon day” may refer to demonic activity.

6. The devil’s angels: (Matt. 25:41, Rev. 12:9)

7. The angels which kept not their first estate: (2 Peter 2:4, Jude 6)

8. Familiar spirits: (Luke 7:21, Acts 19:12-13)

9. Unclean spirits: (Matt. 10:1, Mark 1:27, Mark 3:11, Mark 5:3, Acts 5:16, Acts 8, Rev. 16:13)

10. Evils spirits: (Luke 7:21, Acts 19:12-13)

11. Demons: The word daimon is found more than 75 times in the Greek New Testament. The word
devil in the King James Version. Demons are simply another title or name for fallen angels. The following
verses (Matt. 4:24, Matt. 7:22, Matt. 8:16, Matt. 9:32, Matt. 10:8, Matt. 12:22, Matt. 15:22, Matt. 17:18,
Mark 1:32,34,39; Mark 3:13; Mark 6:13; Mark 9:38; Mark 16:9; Mark 16:17; Luke 4:33,41; Luke 8:2; Luke
11:14; John 7:20; John 8:48; 1 Cor. 10:21; 1 Tim. 4:1; James 2:19; Rev. 9:20)

12. The locations of fallen angels: Unchained angels, having a certain amount of freedom at the present
time. (Psalms 78:49, Eph. 6:12, Rev. 12:7-9) Chained angels having no freedom at the present time, the
angels in Tartarus (2 Peter 2:4, Jude 6) The angels in the bottomless pit “the Abyss” (Luke 8:31, Rev. 9:1-
2, Rev. 9:11, Rev. 11:7, Rev. 17:8, Rev. 20:13)

13. The sin of the bound angels: One third of these angels will be judged by God and thrown in Gehenna
Hell. There are different places in Hell for different things

Satan’s organized Kingdom goes like this

1. There are evil angels who rule over the nations of this world (Dan. 10:13)

2. A wicked angel named legion headed up a large group of fallen spirits that had possessed the maniac
of Gadara (Mark 5:9)

3. The bottomless pit is under the control of an angel called “Abaddon” in Hebrew and “Apollyon” in the
Greek (Rev. 9:11)

4. Four military angels will lead a hellish army two hundred million strong during the latter part of the
tribulation (Rev. 9:15)

5. The angels organize those events which lead to the battle of Armageddon (Rev. 16:13-14)
Demons speak, possess intelligence “they know Jesus (Luke 4:34).” They know of future damnations
(Matt. 8:29). They know the saved from the unsaved (Acts 16:15, Rev. 9:4). They experience emotions
(Luke 8:28, James 2:18). They possess great strength (Exodus 8:7, Exodus 7:11-12, Dan. 10:13, Mark 5:4,
Mark 9:17-26, 2 Cor. 10:4-5, Rev. 9:15-19). They cause insanity, immorality, muteness of speech,
blindness, suicidal mania, personal injuries, physical defects. They can possess human beings “example”
Mary Magdalene had seven demons living in her prior to her conversion. Simon (Acts 13) this demon
possessed sorcerer, possessed Simon to twist the gospel message into a perverted profit system. (Acts
18:3-11) Elymas, this demon possessed sorcerer, attempted to frustrate Paul’s efforts to win the
governor of Cyprus to Christ. (Acts 16:16-18) A slave girl tried to identify itself with the work of Paul, so
that the message of Christ might be confused in the mind of those in Philippi.

Demons are used of God

Demons are used by God to fulfill his divine purpose. A demon was used to punish wicked King
Abimelich (Judges 9:23). A demon was used to prepare for the execution of King Ahab in battle (1 Kings
22:19-23). A demon brought out the true nature of unsaved King Saul (1 Sam. 16:14). Demons were
used to punish rebellious Israel during the time of wandering (Psalms 78:49 He cast upon them the
fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.)
Demons will be used to bring ungodly nations to Armageddon for slaughtering at the end of the
tribulation (Rev. 16:13-16).

The destiny of unsaved angels

1. To be judged by Christ and his church (1 Cor. 6:3)

2. To be cast into the lake of fire forever (Matt. 25:41, 2 Peter 2:4, Jude 6)

We know nothing about angels having salvation. Only humans can be saved, the lake of fire is an eternal
torment for wicked men and angels (Rev. 14:10, Rev. 19, Rev. 20:11-15)
