MKAG 1113 2

1) Explain the no-slip condition and what causes it.

2) Describe system, surroundings, and boundary in the context of the control volume and
systems approach.

3) What is the Eulerian description of fluid motion? How does it differ from the
Lagrangian description?

4) A steady, incompressible, two-dimensional velocity field is given by the following

components in the 𝑥𝑦-plane.

𝑢 = 1.1 + 2.8𝑥 + 0.65𝑦 𝑣 = 0.98 − 2.1𝑥 − 2.8𝑦

Calculate the acceleration field (find expressions for acceleration components 𝑎𝑥 and
𝑎𝑦 ), and calculate the acceleration at the point (𝑥, 𝑦) = (−2,3).

5) Fluid motion consist of particles that are continuously moving and interacting with each
other as it flows. It is quite impossible to apply the conservation laws of mass and
momentum that follows the movement of each fluid particle in the flow. A different
approach is needed such that fluid flow analyses can be done without having to track
every single particle.

(i) Name and describe this alternative approach.

(ii) Name a theorem that links these two approaches.

6) Streamlines, pathlines and streaklines are commonly applied to visualize fluid flow.

(i) Which of the above is a Lagrangian concept and explain why.

(ii) Under what condition can the three lines coincide in a flow field?
(iii) Streamlines never cross each other in a flow field. However they can meet at a
singular point in the flow. Name this point and what is the pressure at this point
called?

7) A two-dimensional flow field is described by the following equation

⃗ = (𝑢, 𝑣) = (0.3𝑥 − 0.5𝑦)𝑖 + (2.0 + 0.5𝑥 − 0.3𝑦)𝑗

𝑉

(i) Find the point in the flow field where the pressure is maximum.
(ii) Determine whether a fluid mass in the above flow field would be subjected to
rotation, compression or distortion.
(iii) By taking an initially square unit of fluid mass with corner points A, B, C and D,
sketch the transformation that it would have undergone in the flow field given.
