The project aims to prevent diseases from mosquitoes and reduce dengue cases in Barangay Villa Kananga, Butuan City through mosquito fogging, insecticides, and informational materials. Dengue is a major problem in the area, with over 2,500 cases and 8 deaths in 2019. The project will fog high-risk areas twice monthly for 2 years and distribute informational graphics twice yearly. It will educate residents on preventing mosquito breeding and promote environmental cleanliness. The PHP 839,664 budget will purchase fogging machines, insecticides, and printed materials with funding from the national DOH and LGU counterpart. I. Project Rationale and Objectives

Mosquitos may look harmless but they are the main vectors for human major diseases
such as dengue which infects millions of people around the world. Hence, it is important to
combat and control their population to prevent further spreading of sickness.
According to the regional DOH spokesperson, Romelyn Torralba, dengue cases in
Caraga reached 2,535 with eight deaths from Jan. 1 to Feb. 2 in 2019. She also identified 10
barangays around Butuan City as dengue hot spots. These are the following barangays:
Ambago, Mahogany, Bading, San Vicente, Agusan Pequeño, Tandang Sora, Villa Kananga,
Libertad, Baan KM 3 and JP Rizal. Furthermore, a surveillance report of DOH-CARAGA
epidemiology also reveals, Agusan del Sur having the most number of dengue cases at 1,300,
followed by Butuan City with 1,200 and Surigao del Sur, 1,037 in 2019.
For this reason, we need to address the problems brought by these tiny but deadly disease-
carrying vectors. This project does not only help control the rising population of mosquitoes but
also hopes to:
• Bring back fogging activities to prevent future outbreaks of dengue
• Learn about the benefits of mosquito fogging process.
• Enhance the awareness of citizens about the negative health effects brought by
mosquitos
• Provide further knowledge about mosquito infestations and help lessening risk of
infections
• Enhance discipline
• Diminish on-going number of cases like dengue
• Make better and cleaner environment for the residents in the barangay
• Have a concern for the environment through managing breeding sites at their homes

Through these goals we can ensure that management control for infestations would aid
in promoting well-being and lives for everyone. Additionally, mitigating the impact of the disease.

II. Project Description

A mosquito fogging machine is an equipment used to deliberately knock down adult
mosquitoes. The chemical used in the mosquito fogging machine is a synthetic pyrethroid that
is very similar to the insecticides used in most domestic repellent cans. Aside from that, the
insecticide is odourless. Furthermore, the amount of insecticide in the fog is very small. The
small droplet size allows the chemicals to disperse and bore through in deep leafy parts of a tree
or plant, killing mosquitoes that are hiding underneath. With that, the concentrations used will
not have harmful effects on people who are exposed to the fog unlike the other process called
fumigation, which involves the use of toxic chemicals like formaldehyde solutions that has a
harmful effect to humans that causes irritation of eyes, nose and headaches.
Mosquito fogging operations will be carried out between 5:20 to 7:20 am, or 4:20 to 6:20
pm, as this time, they are most active during early mornings and late afternoon and for this
reason, it is best to do the process in this period of time. This will go on passages of the barangay
that are consider to be a breeding-prone area, specifically canals. However, this method alone
is not enough to secure the protection of everyone from mosquito bites. To lessen and manage
dengue outbreaks a series of actions needs to be done not only by public authorities, but also
by the localities in the barangay.
As claimed by the Department of Health, avoiding mosquito bites remains the best
prevention from infection adding that there are several practical measures that one can take to
avoid being bitten and being infested of mosquitoes at their homes. With the help of infographic
materials, we can promote measures to effectively prevent being infiltrated by these vectors with
context like:
a) Making sure all tanks, water deposits, and containers are covered and sealed to keep out
mosquitoes as it lay eggs in and near standing waters.
b) Clean gutters and drains. Remove leaves and dirt to prevent them clogging the drainages.
c) Safely disposed unused containers and objects that can cumulate water.
d) Keep grass short and outdoors clean.

By having these proposed interventions, we can prevent future outbreaks of dengue and
other mosquito-borne diseases in the barangay. In turn, creating a safer, cleaner and
comfortable environment for the residents. If approved, the mosquito fogging would be done
twice a month for the next 2 years in Barangay Villa Kananga, Butuan City while handing out of
infographics would be carried out twice a year. This operation would be done with the assistance
and guidance of the following:
• Barangay leaders
• Health personnel
• Community volunteers
• Local Mosquito Control Services
