This document provides examples and problems for students to practice converting between bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, and gigabytes. It includes an example problem of determining if music files totaling 41.2 MB can be transferred to an iPod with 0.05 gigabytes (51.2 MB) of free space. Students are then asked to complete 9 additional problems involving converting file sizes, determining available storage space on various devices, and identifying the largest storage capacity out of several options. The document concludes by asking students to create a small text file and identify its size.

Homework: Bits and Bytes

Name:________________________________________Id Number:__________Date:___________

Read the following example and solve the cases.

Example 1
1. You want to transfer some songs from your cd’s to your iPod but you have only 0.05 Gigabytes left.

2. You want to know if the space of your iPod is enough to store the files.

Song Size
So what - Pink 3.5 MB
Tarde o temprano – Tommy Torres 4.1 MB
Vía Láctea - Zoe 7.8 MB
Préstame atención – Los Claxons 7.9 MB
Everything - Lifehouse 13.1 MB
Fascinante - Panda 9.3 MB
Tota 41.2 MB
l
3. So we want to know if 41.2 MB can be stored in 0.05 Gigabytes of memory, thus, we need to perform
some conversions.

1 Megabyte = 220 bytes

1 Gigabyte = 230 bytes

Conversion of 0.05 Gigabytes to bytes:

1 Gigabyte  230 bytes

0.05 Gigabyte  x = 53 687 091.2 bytes

The previous calculation states that 0.05 Gigabytes = 53 687 091.2 bytes, which is the space that is left in
the iPod to store the music files.

Now, we need to convert 53 687 091.2 bytes to Megabytes

1 Megabyte  220 bytes

x  53 687 091.2 bytes
51.2 Megabytes left in the iPod!
So, there’s enough space to transfer the song files to the Ipod, and still we would have space
41.2 MB

10 MB

51.2 MB

Solve the following conversions.

1. You want to transfer the pictures of the year 2009 to a USB that has 0.8 gigabytes left. The total size of
the folder you want to transfer is: 920MB.

a) Is it possible to store the 920MB in 0.8 gigabytes?.

Show your procedure, and explain your answer.

2. You have a new storage device that offers 2 GB of storage space. It is currently empty. Your friend wants
to give you a large digital photo that´s 16 MB. Will it fit on your storage device? Use a graph to represent the
percentage use and the percentage free.

3. You have a song file of 3.40 MB, express this value in KB.

4. Your cellphone has a capacity of 2 GB. 200,000 KB are used by the apps of your cellphone. How many
image files can you store on your cell phone?. Hint. Each image file uses 2500 KB

5. A movie file is approximately of 1550 MB. How many movies can you store in a DVD of 4.7 GB?

6. How much space in MB is left in a USB memory of 512 MB if I add 18 files that have a size of 1100 bytes
each and 10 files of 23400 KB each?

7. Which of the following options has the highest storage capacity?

a) 1576648 bytes
b) 1.2 MB
c) 1675 KB
d) 12000000 bits

8. How many pictures can a digital camera with memory of 2 GB can store, if each file has a size of 2 MB?

9. In your computer, verify the free and used space that the DISC C (or Macintosh HD if your have an Apple
computer) has, and show the quantities that appear in the used space, the free space and the capacity of the
hard disk.

10. Open a Notepad file, and insert the following text: “ bits and bytes “, save it as File01.
Which is the size of the file? Explain the file’s size.
