Different Types of Function
Different Types of Function
Have
Learned
A. Complete the following statements to show how you understood the different types
of functions. Answer using your own words.
1. A polynomial function consists of one or more terms of variables with whole
number exponents.
2. An exponential function is in the form f(x) = abx where a and b are constants, b is
a positive real number not equal to 1, and the argument x occurs as an
exponent.
3. A rational function is any function which can be defined by a rational fraction,
which is an algebraic fraction such that both the numerator and the denominator
are polynomials.
4. An absolute value function is a function that contains an algebraic expression
within absolute value symbols.
5. A greatest integer function is represented / denoted by ⌊x⌋, for any real function.
The function rounds-off the real number down to the integer less than the
number.
Evaluating function is the process of determining the value of the function at the
number assigned to the given variable. Just like in evaluating algebraic expressions,
to evaluate functions you just need to replace each letter in the expression with the
assigned value, then perform the operations in the expression using the correct
order of operations. Don’t forget to interpret your answer.
What I
Can Do
In this part of the module, you will apply your knowledge on evaluating functions in
solving real-life situations. Write your complete answer on the given space.
b. How much will Mark charge for 55-page encoding and printing work?
f(x) = 100 + 5x
f(55) = 100 + 5(55)
f(55) = 100 + 275
f(55) = P375
Mark will charge P375 for 55-page encoding and printing work
P(t) = 1
1 + 15(2.1) -0.3t
Where P(t) is the proportion of the population that has the virus (t) days after the
acquisition of virus started. Find p(4) and p(10), and interpret the results.
P(4) = 1 P(10) = 1
1 + 15(2.1)-0.3(4) 1 + 15(2.1)-0.3(10)
P(4) = 1 P(10) = 1
1 + 15(2.1)-1.2 1 + 15(2.1)-3
P(4) = 1 P(10) = 1
1 + 15(2.43) 1 + 15(0.10798)
P(4) = 1 P(10) = 1
1 + 36.45 1 + 1.6197
P(4) = 1 P(10) = 1
37.45 2.6197
P(4) = 0.026 P(10) = 0.3817
It can be noted that P(4) has a result of 2.6% while P(10) has a result of 38%
which means the longer of days the higher of chances that the virus spread.
