1. Follow safe practices for direct client care.

• What is work place health and safety? - It is the


practice of promoting and maintaining the highest
standards in creating an environment that issafe for the
physical, mental and social well being of clients at a
workplace.
• Elements of safe practices in direct care -
ü Follow work place policies and procedures.
üidentify existing and potential hazards in the work place,
report them to designated persons and record them
according to workplace procedures.
• What is a hazard? - It is any source / situation that
poses a threat / harm to one's physical, mental or social
well being and/ or including damage to property, the
environment or a combination of these.
• What is a risk? - It is the probability and consequences
of injury, illness or damage resulting from exposure to a
hazard.

üIdentify any client related risk factors or behaviours of
concern, report them to designated persons and record
them according to work place procedures.
• Work environment can be less predictable, hence one
has to remain alert and watchout for aggressive or violent
client behaviours.
• Effective management of mental illness, neurological
disorders, head injuries, confusion,
disorientation/dementia, drug and alcohol withdrawal may
pose risks to harm.
• Effective communication skills are a vital component in
handling and preventing situations of violence or
aggression at a work place.
üFollow workplace policies and procedures to minimise risk.
üIdentify and report incidents and injuries to designated
persons according to workplace procedures.

What is manual handling? - Any extertion of force done
by a person to lift, pull, push, lower, move, carry, restrain or
hold any object, person or animal.
It is a major cause of workplace injury.
Common hazards from manual handling
1. Lifting (usually affects back and arms)
2. Twisting (affects back, arms, chest and stomach
muscles)
3. Repetitive movements (cause soft tissue injuries and
fatigue)
4. Bending (strains back)
3. Follow safe work practices for infection control.
• Follow standard precautions as part of own work
routine to prevent the spread of infection.
• Recognise situations when additional infection control
measures or procedures are required.
• Apply additional precautions when standard
precautions alone may not be sufficient to prevent
transmission of infection.
• Identify risks of infection and report them according to
workplace procedures.
Standard Precautions
The main purpose of infection control is to reduce risk of
infection transmission from recognised and unrecognised
sources
Where do standard precautions apply?
1. Blood (including dried blood)
2. All body substances, secretions, excretions (excluding
sweat) regardless of whether or not they contain blood.
3. Non-intact skin.
4. Mucous membranes including eyes.
Use of barriers and safe work practices.
• Hand hygiene.
• Appropriate use of PPE (facial protection, masks,
gloves,gowns,aprons,gumboots)
• Appropriate device handling.
• Appropriate handling of laundry.
• Disinfection protocols
• Appropriate disposal of waste.
• Incorporation of respiratory hygiene or cough etiquette.
4. Contribute to safe work practices in the workplace.
• Raise workplace health and safety issues with designated
persons according to organisational procedures.

• Participate in workplace safety meetings, inspections and


consultative activities.

• Contribute to the development and implementation of safe


workplace policies and procedures in own work area.
5. Reflect on own safe work practice.
• Identify ways to maintain currency of safe work practices
in regards to workplace systems, equipment and
processes in own work role.
• Reflect on own levels of stress and fatigue, and report to
designated persons according to work place procedures.
• Participate in workplace debriefing to address individual
needs.
