Chapter II
Lesson 4 LINKAGES AND NETWORKING WITH ORGANIZATIONS
“We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along
these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results”
Introduction:

 The school and its community, in collaboration with public and private institutions and
organizations are indeed inseparable if they are to create an impact on the lives of the students
and members of the community they are committed to serve.
 Such interrelationships will be characterized by reciprocity and genuine sharing of
responsibilities, thus ensuring valuable gains and attainment of educational objectives.
 The school can enjoy linkages and networking activities with international, national, and local
organizations in the community for mutual benefits and assistance needed.
- Prepare a list of projects and activities it plans to undertake including the much needed
assistance in terms of human and material resources
- Then determine the institutions and organizations with parallel objectives and service.
 A network system could be design incorporating the strength and availability of services and
expertise from both or among the group.
 Linkages also termed interconnections, with institutions functioning along the same mission
intended to serve members of both sides according to their respective needs, interests and
objectives.
Here are some working linkages between schools nationwide and associations’ centers with local offices
manned by a complete set of officials and active members:
LINKAGES

1. International Linkages
a. Pi Lambda Theta
 Pi Lambda Theta is an international honor society and professional association of
women educators.
 Based in its main office in Michigan, chapters are located in different universities
nationwide. Philippine is the only chapter outside the United States.
 Established in the country more than 3 decades ago, year 1997 in coordination
with Metrobank.
 Main project is ETP (Excellence in the Teaching Project)
 It supports 15 third year BSE and BEE until they graduate.
 It also honors outstanding student teachers from College of Education.
b. INNOTECH
 INNOTECH is the center for training educational leaders from Southeast region
under the SEAMEO organization.
 It conducts training programs to upgrade the competencies of teachers from the
region in all disciplines.
 One of its project is to update teachers’ knowledge and skills in implementing
alternative learning system.
 It has prepared a comprehensive framework on peace and multi-cultural
diversity.
c. World Council for Curriculum and Instruction (WCCI)
 The council holds conferences in different member countries annually which is
participated in by members of the local chapter.

d. Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD)


 ASCD is a membership organization that develops programs, products, and
services essential to the way educators learn, teach, and lead.
 Founded in 1943. It has 150 members in more than 145 countries who are
professional educators from all levers. www. ascd.org

2. National and Local Linkages


a. Linkages could be established between universities and colleges offering identical degrees.
Cross-enrolment for subject needed for graduation is allowed.
b. Joint researches could be conducted by two or three universities depending on their respective
expertise. The dissemination of findings t other universities in the area is a big help.

Networking
• Is a grid/ web whose members actively demonstrate how they can work together to attain
common objectives, undertake innovative practices and update members regarding
breakthrough in different disciplines.
* A connection with other person, group, companies or institutions that agree to work
together to attain a common goal
1. Networking with Professional Organizations
A. Consortium among Universities and Colleges
* Consortium – is also a term for institution
a. Taft Consortium – The universities that make up the consortium are the St.
Paul University (Manila), St. Scholastica’s College, Philippine Normal University,
Philippine Christian University and De La Salle University.
* The science teachers from each college met regularly for discussions on “best
practices”.
* They also write a book for their respective students to use.
b. The Mendiola Consortium – It is composed of San Beda College, Centro
Escolar University, San Sebastian College, Holy Spirit College and La Consolacion College
* They agree to unite their resources to enhance the capability of providing
quality education and public service, and to participate more effectively in the attainment of
national development. Because Mendiola Consortium become a peace zone since it was
traditionally a site of rallies because of its proximity to Malacañang Palace.

B. With Subjects Specialist – A group of educational institutions, professionals and


Specialists, professors, and instructors from colleges of education.
a. BIOTA – organization of Biology teachers from universities nationwide.
* Yearly they conduct a convention where all members gather to discuss the
“latest” in their own areas.
* Each chapter conduct and sponsor teachers training seminars and workshops
b. MATHTED – is the council of Mathematics Teachers and Educators.
* Its major project is to upgrade the competence of Mathematics teacher’s trough national
conferences, workshops and training sessions conducted nationwide. MTAP (Mathematics
Teachers Association of the Philippines) takes charge of basic math teachers. MSP
(Mathematical Society of the Philippines) and MT (Mathematics Trainers’) Guild conduct
projects for college teachers.
c. The Physics Teachers Association – composed of specialist in Physics
Education
* they are conducting professional development programs, sponsors contest and
participates actively in international conferences
d. The Chemistry Teachers Association – active groups that attends to the
upgrading of chemistry teachers through national conventions and assemblies.

C. Teacher Education Institutions


a. The Philippine Association for Teacher Education (PAFTE) – Composed of
deans, professors, and instructors from colleges of education from both private and public
government universities.
* One of the goals is to raise and maintain standards of teacher education and
enhance the nobility of the teaching profession through effective leadership.
* They are also conducting a midyear and national conventions and assemblies for
mutual expertise and sharing expertise.
* Educational tour
b. State Universities and Colleges Teacher Educators’ Association
(SUCTEA) – includes all state colleges of education as members.
* An annual convention is usually held in the different regions bringing Deans and
Teacher Education Professors together for an exchange of approaches and modes of delivering
quality teacher education for the youth.

D. National Organization
a. FAAD (Federation of Accrediting Associations of the Philippines) – the
main function is to conduct accreditation of the educational qualification and facilities starting
from the administration, curriculum, faculty profile and the learning environment, among others.
b. PACUCOA (Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities
Commission on Accreditation)
c. AACUP (Association for Accrediting Colleges and Universities of the
Philippines)
* Accreditation is important because it helps to determine if an institution meets or exceeds the
minimum standards of quality or excellence.
* An accreditation agency doesn’t judge an institution by comparing it with others, but if the
vision-mission are matched by actual practice in the various areas being evaluated.
2. Networking with Foundations
Foundations (Charitable foundation) nonprofit that will typically provide funding and support for
other charitable organizations through grants but may engage directly in charitable activities.
a. Educational Research and Development Assistance (ERDA) Foundation, Inc. -
* It supports programs and services in health livelihood and continuing education. But
their focus is in education. It started in 6 out of school youth first until it spread nationwide.
Program/s: BALIK PAARALAN PROGRAM
ALS – Alternative Learning system – is based on ALS of the Department of
Educations ALS. It is for the youth especially youth who stopped going to formal school for a
long term.
b. Metrobank Foundation, Inc
Flagship (leading) program SEARCH FOR OUTSTANDING TEACHERS (1985) It annually
recognizes and honors outstanding teachers of the three educational levels from school
nationwide.
Excellence in Teaching Program (ETP) – 1979 in the partnership with the Pi Lambda Theta
(PLT) provided 141 2- year scholarship grants to students majoring in Math, English or Science.
The college scholarship programs are one of the flagship programs in education. Scholars receive
full subsidies for tuition fees and fixed allowances every semester.
c. Network of Outstanding Teachers and Educators (NOTED) founded by Metrobank
Composed of all the winners of the Metrobank Foundation’s Search for Outstanding Teachers.
As an honor society it is committed to nurturing a culture of excellence and service among
educators through professional development.
d. Ayala Foundation, Inc. (AFI) Is a nonprofit organization that serves as a socio-
cultural development arm of the Ayala Group of Companies which works to “fulfill the
needs of the whole person”
* “To provide something that people need” the theme of programs is education, youth
leadership, sustainable livelihood and arts and culture.
* CENTEX – Academic and talents specially arts, music and dance
e. GMA Foundation - “To give hope and a future to the Filipino family by safeguarding
human rights and upgrading standards of education”
* They also merit scholarships
f. SM Foundations- They collect books and educational materials from public and
donate it to public schools and community library
* Offer Scholarships and build school buildings
g. Foundation for Upgrading Standards in Education (FUSE)
* Continuing education via Television (Constel)
* Videotapes/DVD of Constel are also sold and donate to schools
* Offers scholarship to teachers who wants to pursue doctorate degree in Science
and Mathematics
h. Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology (PFST)
* It is founded to promote Science and Technology to the youth
i. Books for the Barrio and Asia Foundation
* They donate books and other printed materials to the public and private elementary and
secondary schools.
j. Bato Balani Foundation
* honors teachers through “Tribute to the Teachers” program
* Provide Educational programs
k. Philippine Business for Education (PBEd)
Purpose:
1. To nurture consensus on key directions in education reform and to initiate and lead the
actions towards those directions
2. To identify best opportunities for pursuing strategic actions that can most effectively
direct, accelerate, broaden or sustain education
3. To inform consideration of such strategic actions with the best available knowledge and
information
4. To mobilize commitment in support of consensus on the specific nature of strategic
actions
* Their goal is to become the voice of the business community in the matter of
concerning education in the country. PBEd launched several programs to help address the
declining quality of teachers in the country. They created the STEP UP scholarship
campaign that seek to attracts graduating students, financially challenged junior students
and good performing college graduates into a teaching profession.

3. Networking with Government Offices


a. Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC) under the Dep Ed trains trainers who handle literacy
training courses among the youth.
b. The Dept. of Science and Technology (DOST) supports undergraduate and graduate
scholarship programs in science and mathematics in the Regional Science Teaching Centers were selected
Centers of Excellence by the Panel for Teacher Education, (CHED).
c. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) organizes Technical Panels for all
professions, selects institutions as Centers of Excellence in their chosen fields regularly benchmarks the
curricula of all degrees with international standards.
d. The Teacher Education Council (TEC) of the Dep Ed focuses its program on teacher
education policies and standards. This is the link between DepEd and CHED.

4. Networking with Media


a. Broadcast ABS-CBN and GMA Foundation provide assistance to school children and
teachers through its educational broadcasts, donation of instructional materials, and school buildings and
conducting interviews of achievers in various professions.
b. Government and private channels, likewise, include award – winning entries to national
competitions in the fields of education, sports, and healthcare.
c. Historic and cultural events and celebrations brought to all homes promote the spirit of
nationalism and pride. Technical know- how and methodical procedures serve as welcome guides in daily
activities.
d. Publication and Prints – publication through the daily newspapers, magazines and other
reading materials are rich sources of information for purposes. Important events, international national
and local are recorded and filed future references. Outstanding speeches, papers read in conferences and
literary piece are prints that provide valuable insights and enlightenment.
e. Projected Materials – Education films and projected documentaries widen children’s
knowledge and outlook for growth and development. Videotapes on the overview of the K to 12
curriculum are likewise available.
