The two early civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia relied on flooding from nearby rivers for agriculture. While Egypt lay along the predictable Nile River, Mesopotamia was located between the unpredictable Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, making it prone to destructive flooding. The geography also impacted defense - Mesopotamia was vulnerable to invasion from both sides along the rivers, while Egypt's desert borders provided protection. Both civilizations benefited from their geography in some ways despite differences.

The two early civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia shared
some of the same features but also varied in some aspects. The geography of these civilizations played a major role in the way they functioned and grew.
While Egypt lay in the valley of the Nile River surrounded on
each side by desert. Mesopotamia lay in the valley between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Both of these civilizations relied on the flooding from the surrounding rivers to leave behind deposits in the soil to make it rich for agricultural use. As a result of the agricultural growth the population in these civilizations grew as well. Unfortunately, the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers were very unpredictable and which made Mesopotamia prone to destructive flooding. Egypt was lucky and the Nile river was much more calm and predictable. The tropical rains of spring and summer in the Ethiopian Mountains would pour into the Nile and cause it to flood by July with excess water running into the valley. The floodwater would begin to recede by October and would leave behind very fertile soil used to cultivate many different crops. Acrobatiq. (2017)
The geographic features of these two civilizations also
impacted how they could be invaded. Mesopotamia being between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers made it much more prone to invasion on both sides from other empires and there was a constant battle for control of the area. Egypt on the other hand, was right between two deserts. Being between the two deserts created a good amount of distance and made it much more difficult for other empires to try to invade. Acrobatiq. The geography of both Mesopotamia and Egypt are alike in
some ways and different in others. Each of these civilizations were able to use their geographical traits to benefits them in some ways. Acrobatiq. (2017). Survey of world history. Retrieved from https://wgunx.acrobatiq.com/courseware/contents/wh_apr14
