the writing of your life history in the box below. Present this in class and discuss
how it qualifies as a primary source.
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

These photos of mine are primary sources that can be used in writing
my own life history. These photos were taken on some particular important
even of my life starting when I was young. The first photo was taken when I
graduated in day care center. The picture on the right side of it was taken when
I graduated kindergarten. The next one was when I served as a flower girl on
my auntie’s wedding. Meanwhile the photo below on the left side was when my
cousin got married and the next one was when I won on the Division Schools
Press Conference when I am in junior high school. The next one was when I
am in senior high school and the photo beside it was taken when I first joined
a school pageant. The next photo was when we went to Bihiya beach with my
classmates and then followed by my photo when I graduated senior high
school. The 11th photo was when I am already studying in MINSCAT followed
by my photo when I joined the pageant again. The 13 th photo was when I am
taking my online class followed by my photo when my high school teacher got
married. Finally, the last two photos were taken last February 24 when I
celebrated my 20th birthday.
Moreover, primary sources are said to be those sources produced at the
same time as the event, period, or subject being studied. So, all of these photos
of mine are qualified as primary sources because all of these were taken in a
particular event that happened in my life. These are all first-hand and not
interpreted or edited by anyone else.

WORKSHEET 1
• Answer the following questions.

ESSAY

1. What is your understanding of history? How is your view different from

what is explained in this lesson?

As of my understanding, history is a very important thing because it is

not only about the past, it also serves as our guide in living in the present and
in the future. Today, modern history has really gone beyond the traditional
status of an antiquarian and leisure time pursuit to a very useful and
indispensible part of a man’s education. History, as of now is more scientific
and more comprehensive. It really gives us sense of identity.
Furthermore, my own point of view is not far from what is explained in
our lesson. At first, I really thought that history is the study of the past which
can have an impact to our present and future living. For instance, the study of
the life of famous people or the personalities that had their great contributions
to our world, study of different events, ways of living in the past and other
important things that are worth it to study. But after going through our module,
I realized that I still haven’t seen the wider understanding and scope of history.
I had learned here that history is the study of change over time covering all
aspects of human society. It is not only limited to those famous people,
important events or tradition but the history of the common man and everything
he did in his life, starting to the very small thing up to those things that he can
consider as achievements or even failures.
We all create a history. And history does not belong to us, we belong to
it. Moreover, I do believe in Theodore Roosevelt when he said that the more
you know about the past, the better prepared you are in the future.

2. As a student of history, what do you think will be your duties?

History is about learning the past stories to serve as our guide in the
present and in the future. As a student of history, it is my duty to know and be
familiar about our past especially with regards to our culture and tradition, our
heroes and other important events that happened in our country, the same with
the world’s important events. It is also my duty to learn, imbibe and practice the
values that I can learn from historical information. For instance, the bravery of
our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal as he fought for our independence in a
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

bloodless way. Another example is the resourcefulness and hard work of our
ancestors.
Moreover, it is my duty to appreciate and give importance to our country,
the world and in our own race. As a student of history, I should not disregard
the efforts that had been done in the past to acquire everything we have today.
I do believe that as a student, I can make great things starting from preserving
and appreciating our own culture and tradition up to creating something that
can enrich our own race.

3. Why is there a need to understand and realize the meaning and

importance of our history?

It is very important for us to understand and realize the meaning and

importance of our history since it enables us to develop a better understanding
of the world in which we live. It is very important because history allows us to
make more sense of the current world. It is the key to unlocked the and
understand the rules and everything that exist in our modern society. Through
history, our questions in mind with regards to our existence will be answered.
For example, if we know about the history of our place and our ancestors, we
will also be aware why we have this certain kind of place and living as of today.
Furthermore, it is very important also to understand and realize the
meaning and importance of history since it serves as our guide to be productive
in the present and to create a better future. Our history enables us to know the
good things to do and the things that we need to improve to achieve a better
self, a better society, and a better world.

4. Think about or reflect on your past. Has your past influenced you in a
way or another? How does your past shape your identity and behavior?

We cannot bring back the past but we can improve our present and
future through having the lessons we acquired in the past.
This is the most important thing that bares into my mind while
reminiscing my past. I really experienced many ups and downs in life and all of
those had influenced me in many ways. The past really helped in shaping my
identity and behavior. The good things that happened in my life inspired me to
continue doing such good things while the failures that I had encountered in the
past had challenged me to do better and create a difference in order to achieve
the best version of myself.
In my 20 years of existence, I had experienced many problems, school
problems, family problems, or even problems in our society but I know that
these are normal and struggles are part of life. I had even reached the point of
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

being suicidal due to piles of problems that came but I am very thankful to God
because he never leaved me and he even made me stronger. Although I had
been in so much struggles, of course I also have so much beautiful and grateful
memories to reminisce. Those memories made me really blessed and inspired
me to continue being a good person.
Moreover, in my 20 years of existence, I realized that life is a circle of
happiness, sadness, hard times, and good times. We should not only lose hope
since everything happens for a reason. And I am very thankful that I have a
colorful past. All the ups and downs in life that I had experienced shaped me to
be a better person and I know that all the things that happened in my past will
lead me to attain the best version of myself in the future.

TRUE OR FALSE

Write T if the statement is correct and F if it is not.

T 1. An examination of the past can tell us a great deal about how we came
to be who we are.
F 2. History means “the present of mankind”.
T 3. History includes people’s beliefs, desires and practices.
F 4. The English word history is derived from the Latin word istoia.
T 5. Different and new perspectives will enable us to analyze critically the
present contexts of society and beings.

RESEARCH

Research on what Teodoro Agoncillo, Reynaldo Ileto and Renato

Constantino said about history. Combining the definitions provided in
this module and the outputs of your research, formulate your own
definition of History. Explain.

Based on my research, Teodoro Agoncillo, Reynaldo Ileto and Renato

Constantino had given different perspectives about history.
Teodoro Andal Agoncillo was a prominent 20th-century Filipino
historian. According to him, “History deals with the past, not with the future.
We use history to avoid the mistakes of the past, not to recreate the very same
events. You cannot.” He also said that everyone is a historian and everyone
is his own historian.
Meanwhile, Reynaldo "Rey" Clemeña Ileto is a Filipino historian known
for his seminal work Pasyon and Revolution: Popular Movements in the
Philippines, 1840-1910 first published in 1979. Ileto advanced a "history from
COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

below" approach, emphasizing the agency of the common man, and sought for
an exploration of an indigenous rationality to discover a wider "possibility of
meanings" in Philippine history.
The third one was Renato Constantino. He was the Filipino historian
and scholar who taught us to reexamine our colonial history, to rectify it and to
learn from that past. He wanted Filipinos to have a useful memory of a past to
advance the Filipino's quest for genuine nationhood. He opines that
a history biased towards the struggles of the people is one that could free the
Filipinos' consciousness from years of colonial miseducation. Indeed, Tato's
controversial image as a historian and journalist made him one of the most
influential public intellectuals of his generation. Moreover, according to him, it
is the historian's task to trace the pattern which gives meaning to the disparate
events of the historical record, if it were one emerging from the events
themselves.

MY OWN DEFINITION OF HISTORY

“History is a body of knowledge about the past that serves as our guide
in the present and in the future. We cannot bring back the past but it
can change the future. We are all historians of our own race.”

I had formulated this definition of history because based on the

definitions provided in this module and the outputs of my research, I believe
that history is the study of the anything in the past that will guide us to achieve
the best version of our self in the future. People know what happened in the
past by looking at things from the past including sources like books,
newspapers, and letters, artifacts like pottery, tools, and human or animal
remains, and others. We cannot bring back exactly the same thing that had
already happened in the past but the most important thing here is how we
appreciate, value, and use the knowledge that we learned from it, and how we
apply it to the present and future. Moreover, I do believe in Teodoro Agoncillo
when he said that everyone is a historian and everyone is his own historian.
Everyone has his own story in life, thus everyone is also a history maker of his
own life and race.
