1. Jose was exploring the library in his new school in Manila. He wanted to
study the history of Calamba, Laguna during the 19th century. In one of the
books, he saw an old photograph of a woman standing in front of an old church,
clipped among the pages. At the back of the photo was fine inscription that
says: “Kalamba, 19 de Junio 1861”
2. It was Lean’s first day in his first year of college in a big university. His
excitement made him come to class unusually early and he found their
classroom empty. He looked at the table drawer and a saw a book entitled U.G.
An Underground Tale: The Journey of Edgar Jopson and the First Quarter
Storm Generation. He started reading the book and realized that it was a
biography of a student leader turned political activist during the time of
Ferdinand Marcos. The author used interviews with friends and family of
Jopson, and other primary documents related to his works and life.
4. Manuel visited the United States for a few months to see his relatives who
have lived there for decades. His uncle brought him on tours around Illinois.

Manuel visited the Field Museum of Natural History where a golden image of a
woman caught his eye. Manuel looked closer and read that the image was
called “The Golden Tara.” It originated from Agusan del Sur and was bought by
the museum in 1922. It was believed to be made prior to the arrival of the
Spaniards in the Philippines.
5. Gregoria loved to travel around the country. She liked bringing with her a
travel brochure that informs her of the different sites worth visiting in the area.
Her travel brochure was usually produced by the tourism department of the
province. It shows pictures of destinations visited by tourists and a few basic
information about the pace and some other information acquired by the office’s
researchers and writers.
These photos of mine are primary sources that can be used in writing
my own life history. These photos were taken on some particular important
even of my life starting when I was young. The first photo was taken when I
graduated in day care center. The picture on the right side of it was taken when
I graduated kindergarten. The next one was when I served as a flower girl on
my auntie’s wedding. Meanwhile the photo below on the left side was when my
cousin got married and the next one was when I won on the Division Schools
Press Conference when I am in junior high school. The next one was when I
am in senior high school and the photo beside it was taken when I first joined
a school pageant. The next photo was when we went to Bihiya beach with my
classmates and then followed by my photo when I graduated senior high
school. The 11th photo was when I am already studying in MINSCAT followed
by my photo when I joined the pageant again. The 13 th photo was when I am
taking my online class followed by my photo when my high school teacher got
married. Finally, the last two photos were taken last February 24 when I
celebrated my 20th birthday.
Moreover, primary sources are said to be those sources produced at the
same time as the event, period, or subject being studied. So, all of these photos
of mine are qualified as primary sources because all of these were taken in a
particular event that happened in my life. These are all first-hand and not
interpreted or edited by anyone else.

WORKSHEET 1
• Answer the following questions.
ESSAY
History is about learning the past stories to serve as our guide in the
present and in the future. As a student of history, it is my duty to know and be
familiar about our past especially with regards to our culture and tradition, our
heroes and other important events that happened in our country, the same with
the world’s important events. It is also my duty to learn, imbibe and practice the
values that I can learn from historical information. For instance, the bravery of
our national hero Dr. Jose Rizal as he fought for our independence in a

bloodless way. Another example is the resourcefulness and hard work of our
ancestors.
Moreover, it is my duty to appreciate and give importance to our country,
the world and in our own race. As a student of history, I should not disregard
the efforts that had been done in the past to acquire everything we have today.
I do believe that as a student, I can make great things starting from preserving
and appreciating our own culture and tradition up to creating something that
can enrich our own race.
4. Think about or reflect on your past. Has your past influenced you in a
way or another? How does your past shape your identity and behavior?
We cannot bring back the past but we can improve our present and
future through having the lessons we acquired in the past.
This is the most important thing that bares into my mind while
reminiscing my past. I really experienced many ups and downs in life and all of
those had influenced me in many ways. The past really helped in shaping my
identity and behavior. The good things that happened in my life inspired me to
continue doing such good things while the failures that I had encountered in the
past had challenged me to do better and create a difference in order to achieve
the best version of myself.
In my 20 years of existence, I had experienced many problems, school
problems, family problems, or even problems in our society but I know that
these are normal and struggles are part of life. I had even reached the point of

being suicidal due to piles of problems that came but I am very thankful to God
because he never leaved me and he even made me stronger. Although I had
been in so much struggles, of course I also have so much beautiful and grateful
memories to reminisce. Those memories made me really blessed and inspired
me to continue being a good person.
Moreover, in my 20 years of existence, I realized that life is a circle of
happiness, sadness, hard times, and good times. We should not only lose hope
since everything happens for a reason. And I am very thankful that I have a
colorful past. All the ups and downs in life that I had experienced shaped me to
be a better person and I know that all the things that happened in my past will
lead me to attain the best version of myself in the future.

RESEARCH
below" approach, emphasizing the agency of the common man, and sought for
an exploration of an indigenous rationality to discover a wider "possibility of
meanings" in Philippine history.
The third one was Renato Constantino. He was the Filipino historian
and scholar who taught us to reexamine our colonial history, to rectify it and to
learn from that past. He wanted Filipinos to have a useful memory of a past to
advance the Filipino's quest for genuine nationhood. He opines that
a history biased towards the struggles of the people is one that could free the
Filipinos' consciousness from years of colonial miseducation. Indeed, Tato's
controversial image as a historian and journalist made him one of the most
influential public intellectuals of his generation. Moreover, according to him, it
is the historian's task to trace the pattern which gives meaning to the disparate
events of the historical record, if it were one emerging from the events
themselves.
“History is a body of knowledge about the past that serves as our guide
in the present and in the future. We cannot bring back the past but it
can change the future. We are all historians of our own race.”
