What can you say about the pictures? How about the sentences they are using? Is/are there any
similarities or patterns? Did you see any verbs being used in the sentences?
Abstraction
- The teacher will introduce voice to the class after they have answered the questions.

VOICE is refers to the WHO or WHAT that is doing the verb’s action in a sentence.
- -is the term used to describe whether a verb is active or passive.

TWO different voices of the verb:

1. Active Voice – Here, the subject performs the action. He/she is the doer of the action. It is a pretty
straightforward relationship between the subject and the verb. So, we can say that a verb is in the active
voice when the subject is the doer of the action that is expressed by the verb.
Example:
a. The cashier counted the money.
subject Verb
b. The dog chased the squirrel.
-
2. Passive Voice – Here, the subject receives the action that is expressed by the verb. Therefore, we can
say that the verb is in passive when the subject of the verb is acted upon.
Example:
a. The money was counted by the cashier.
subject verb
b. The squirrel was chased by the dog.

When a verb changes from Active Voice to Passive, the subject and object change places with each other. The
past participle form of the verb is used as the main verb in passive voice.

a. The flood ruined the crops ( ACTIVE)

S V DO

b. The crops were ruined by the flood. ( PASSIVE)

S V DO

Example:
ACTIVE Voice PASSIVE Voice
1. The mother carried the baby. The baby was carried by the mother.
2. Father repaired the old chair. An old chair was repaired by father
3. She interviewed the school president. The school president was interviewed by her.
