Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of... the integration of


social science perspective and community action initiatives.

Performance Standard: The learners shall be able to… synthesize the integrative
experience of implementing community-action initiatives applying social
sciences’ ideas and methods.

Most Essential Competencies:


a. compare and contrast the definitions of community using various perspectives (e.g.,
social sciences, institutions, civil society, and local /grassroots level.
b. Compare and contrast the definitions of community using various perspective.

Time Allotment: 50 minutes per Session / 10 days

Communities are diverse. They are never static entities that are simplistic and narrow. The
interpretation itself of what a community is has been debated by social scientist and thought leaders. This
diversity of a common idea exposes the narrative that is vibrant and ever changing or evolving until this
day.

ACTIVITY I. NEEDS AND WANTS


Take five minutes to think about your community and write down all the needs and wants of your
community in the first box list. After listing the needs and wants, list down on the second box the actors
in the different institutions in your community a better place to live in.

ACTIVITY 2. WHAT’S OUT THERE


Write an essay to answer the questions below. In writing your essay, always remember the three Cs
(content -50, clarity -25, cohesion -25). Always be mindful of the content, be clear on what you say, and
be disciplined in ordering your ideas.

TOPIC: what do you think are the institutions that are still lacking in terms of the
basic necessities in helping out the public? Discuss the problems thoroughly and cite
how groups can aid this problem.

Guide Questions:
1. What are the most prevailing problems in your own community?
2. How can the mechanisms of society help in solving this problem?
3. Why is constantly challenging the prevailing norm important?

ACTIVITY 3: OUR OWN MOVEMENT


Brainstorm about the problems you see in your community. Create your own
organization or movement that will strive to solve the problem of your community. Use
the format below to draft your plan.
