Phase Relationships Problems

The document contains three soil problems. Problem 1 involves calculating properties like moisture content, bulk density, and porosity for a soil sample. Problem 2 involves calculating specific gravity and properties like void ratio and saturation given water content and bulk density. Problem 3 involves calculating properties like bulk density, dry density, and porosity for a soil sample based on its excavated mass, moisture content, and particle specific gravity.

PROBLEM 1:

A sample of soil was taken from a road embankment under construction. The sample
was 150mm long by 100mm in diameter and had a mass of 2219g and an oven-dry
mass of 1964g. Given that the particle specific gravity was 2.73, determine the
following;

(i) moisture content

(ii) bulk density
(iii) dry density
(iv) void ratio
(v) porosity
(vi) degree of saturation
(vii) air content

PROBLEM 2:

(a) In a fully saturated soil, the water content and void ratio were determined to be
14% and 38% respectively. What was the specific gravity of the soil particles?

(b) Soil was used to construct an embankment. It was compacted to a bulk density of
1.948 Mg/m3 at a moisture content of 11.3%. Using the value of specific gravity
(particle density) obtained in part (a) above, calculate the void ratio, degree of
saturation and unit weight.

PROBLEM 3:

A sample of soil weighing 2398g was removed from the ground to determine the in-
situ density in its natural condition. The excavated hole was then filled with 1876g of
sand whose density was 1.43Mg/m3. The natural moisture content of the soil was
found to be 12.8% and the specific gravity of the soil particles was 2.69. Determine
the following quantities;

(i) bulk density

(ii) dry density
(iii) unit weight
(iv) void ratio
(v) degree of saturation
(vi) porosity
(vii) air content
