Years, Decades and Centuries
Years, Decades and Centuries
We tend to read four-digit years as a pair of 2-digit numbers. For example: 1997 is nineteen ninety-seven.
We read three- digit years as a pair too. For example: 763 is seven sixty-three.
Examples!
1) When writing of a particular decade follow the numbered date with an "s". For example: 1950s : the
nineteen fifties
2) We can also say them without the century. We use an apostrophe. For example: '50s: the fifties
When we refer to a particular century we must use the century number one iteration after the actual date.
Why?
Because the first century was from the year 0 to the end of 99. The second century refers to the 100s, and so
on.
