APA Style

your own, without acknowledging the original author.

Plagiarism
► Menasche (1997) classified plagiarism into two:
► Plagiarism of ideas
► Plagiarism of language
► Plagiarism of language happens when you lift verbatim a part of an article of
copy an entire article without citing its sources and claim it as your own.
Unless the idea is your own, or it is a common knowledge you need give
proper credit to the source.
► Plagiarism may also happen unintentionally, when you summarize, paraphrase
or reorganize the presentation of ideas without citing the sources.
Summarizing, paraphrasing and re-organizing of ideas still need to be properly
documented though citation of reference. Otherwise, you will be charged of
plagiarism of ideas.
What is a citation
►A bibliographic citation is a reference to a book,
article, web page, or other published
item. Citations should supply detail to identify
the item uniquely.
WHY A P A Style Importance in
research writing ?
► The American Psychological Association, or APA, is
the organization that created the language used and
understood by academics around the world.
► APA style is the expected standard in higher
education and research papers to ensure sources
are cited properly.
Types of APA citations

1. In-text, or parenthetical citations


► are included when you’re adding information from another
individual’s work into your own project. When you add
text word-for-word from another source into your project
or take information from another source and place it in
your own words and writing style (known as paraphrasing),
you must make an in-text citation. These citations are
short in length and are placed in the main part of your
project, directly after the borrowed information.
2. Reference citations

► arefound at the end of your research project,


usually on the last page. Included on this
reference list page are the full citations for any
in-text citations found in the body of the project.
These citations are listed in alphabetical order,
one after the other.
► Better known as BIBLIOGRAPHY / WEBLIOGRAPHY
In-text citations are found after a direct quote, paraphrased
information, or reference.
Format:
► Exact text, paraphrased information, or reference (Author’s Last Name, Year
published, page number or paragraph number*)
Examples :
“Well, you’re about to enter the land of the free and the brave. And I don’t know
how you got that stamp on your passport. The priest must know someone”
(Tóibín, 2009, p. 52).
Student teachers who use technology in their lessons tend to continue using
technology tools throughout their teaching careers (Kent & Giles, 2017).

► An E-Book reference is the same as a book reference except the publisher is
swapped for a URL. The basic structure is as follows:
► Author surname, initial(s) (Ed(s).*). (Year). Title (ed.*). Retrieved from URL
► *optional.

► E-Book example:
► Mitchell, J.A., Thomson, M., & Coyne, R.P. (2017). A guide to citation.

E-Books found on a Database

Reminder:
► Only the first letter of the first word and any proper nouns in the title should
be capitalized.
►A DOI (digital object identifier) is basically a number that links a source to its
location on the Internet. This number isn’t always provided, but if it is, it’s
very important to include it in your citation.

Note: the date includes the year, month and date.
